Thumbs up Feature of digital camera - 10-08-2011, 04:13 AM

In my experience as a photographer
I came across countless of cameras, both digital and analog.Probably the greatest feature of digital cameras is the fabulous LCD screen that allows for real time preview of pictures as you take them. One of the best and most practical digital photography techniques is to make sure to utilize the LCD to its fullest potential by previewing each each picture and making sure it is perfect, if it's not just click delete it and re shoot. The law of optics remains the same whether using new digital photography technology or an old camera.
Instead of film, digital photography uses memory cards to save shotPractice is probably the best tip. The best digital photography technique is to practice using your camera.

It's risky (so Ive heard) to delete in camera. Apparently there is a greater risk of corrupting a card when you delete in camera. Personally I don't delete in camera so I can't confirm or deny that the risk exists.

As a rule I delete in Bridge or Lightroom and format the card once the download is complete and I'm satisfied that the images are on my hard drive. As good as the LCD's are (compared to nothing) I prefer to look at my images on a 21" (or larger) calibrated monitor over relying in the LCD to determine if I should delete an image or not. That said- the ability to preview is definitely a huge plus

Yeah, I never delete in camera. It is also easy to miss things in the little LCD.

I have deleted images in digital cameras since 2000, and never had a problem. I asked a Canon rep, and a very knowledgeable lab rep about it. They both said there was no problem; however, both of them did warn of formatting or deleting images on a CF card in the computer. They advised formatting should be done in the camera.

The only problem I ever heard of was if you had a full card, to not start deleting images one by one.

I never rely on the camera LCD for an accurate evaluation of the image. There have been times I was shooting outdoors and forgot to change the ISO and/or f stop when I come back inside to shoot, So it is great to see that mistake immediately.

With all that said, the only time I delete is when a strobe misfires, or on those occasions I press the button before my brain is engaged, but usually I do not.

I am assuming those who do not delete images in your camera, you do it in the computer. That is what I have been advised not to do.

Here is what a Canon rep advised at a program I attended (I have no idea about what other manufacturers recommend).

New Card - format in camera before using.

After taking images erase individually, if card is not full.
Erase all images in camera anytime.
Never format the card in a computer
Never erase card in the computer.
Format in camera about every week or so.

This is not advice to anyone to delete or not.

.edit.... Clarification... I download the images on the CF card to the computer, eject the card, place the card back in the camera and erase all images while the card is in the camera.

Most photographers disagree with you. Both deleting images in camera, and wasting time standing around looking at your pictures are both bad habits that you should get rid of.

Spend less time chimping and more time shooting.

I shoot. Download. Put the card back in the camera. Format. Sometimes I forget to format but it's never caused the world to end, just duplicate images on my hard drive.

The really crappy ones (almost never have those ) get deleted in Bridge or LR3. The marginally crappy ones are run through my "picture perfection" action, which adjusts composition, color, and quality, and are all hanging in an art museum somewhere. Or not...

I chimp all the time. It's smart IMHO.
Many times I've caught people in portraits repetitively blinking or just plain looking goofy. Had I not chimped, I might of had to do some major PS work later.
I've also caught many of my own mistakes.

What I find crazy is when I see people make excuses about things in their photo that would of been easy to fix before hand had they only paid attention to the LCD.

I also delete in camera, but it has to be something blatantly obvious like a black frame from a misfire or something.
But I agree with the OP, at least for me, the LCD has been by far my favorite feature of digital.

The biggest problem with digital is too much reliance on the LCD. It's the number one cause of improperly exposed photographs, in my worthless, inexperienced opinion.

I leave everything, even if I know it's bad. I like to compare the good and the bad, later, so I can learn from my mistakes.

Is that a fact? Are you SURE?

When I chimp, it's only to look at the histogram. NOT at the image. I know what the image looks like. That's why I took it.
The histogram let's me know if I got my exposure correct.

Use to back when I shot with film, I would get it developed and then noticed something I didn't like. Sometimes I would even go back and shoot it again(if that was possible). Now with digital, I make sure I got the shot before I leave the scene. Heck, I even take test shots and check different angles!
But after reading the above responses I guess I'm really amateur for doing that.
But why NOT use a technology that will insure you got the shot? Is it because you are just that good that you know you got the shot? You know that no one blinked in your portraits? You've never gotten home and thought "dang, had I just moved a little to the left/right/up/down that would of been better"?

I'll admit it, I'm not that good. More times then I can count I wish I had done something differently after viewing, and chimpping allows me to change it at the time I'm shooting. Maybe one day I'll be as good as the above posters.

I can't see enough detail in the little screen for it to be that useful to me so I set it for histogram and just try to insure that I got the exposure right or close to right.
Also, you shoot portraits and weddings, Ie make you're living with photography. If you miss something it's a big deal. I don't. FWIW- I'm not 100% chimp free. As you know the setup for time lapse pretty much demands a test shot and chimp.

I need to send you my picture perfection action. It fixes everything
