I followed the links and they both contain a built in motor to work with your D40.

* Nikon Mount Built in motor lens: compatible with D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D5000

The second lens you have listed adds Sigma's low dispersion technology (signified by the APO branding). This is used to eliminate color aberrations when different light wavelengths do not converge at the same point after passing through optics.

So the question is it work an extra $60 for the APO technology?

I have (have) the DG macro - the first link. The auto focus crapped out on me right after the warranty ran out. It still works fine, everything except auto focus -- a great manual focus zoom. After it happened, I learned it is a pretty common occurrance with this lens - the gears are cheap plastic.
I loved that lens, but I'm a little leary of Sigma after that.

Be sure and check the warranties -- I'd lean towards the one that has the longest one.

Mel,

I would go for the Nikon 55-300mm that one is made for the newer camera's....This one is usually 350 to 400...

Of the two Sigma's I would tell you to do the DG APO version...a little more but the glass is better...

Also, Sigma about a year ago added 3 years to all there lenses, when you have a reciept...call up there NY office... and talk to them...they may fix it still...631-585-1144 talk with Desirey she will put you to the right person....(Yes I call them a lot..!!!)

Here is a copy of the article....it was actually two years ago not one...MY BAD...

All Sigma Lenses have three years....EX lenses have 4 years...EX APO with OS have 5 years...

Sigma USA Extends Warranties on Non-EX Lenses
Good news for Nikonians who enjoy third-party lenses - Sigma Corporation USA announced today that it is extending it's standard one-year International Warranty on all non-EX lenses for two more years, as long as the optics was sold through an US authorized dealer. Previously, only the higher-end EX lenses enjoyed a three-year extended warranty from time of purchase.
