I looked back at my last shoot incident that had the frames rolling over and it does seem to be right after the 9999 count so that may be the only explanation I have for that, but it happened before and I'm not sure about that older situation.

I'm gonna put it to rest for now and try to keep my eye open for it again.

I kinda wonder about if I should rename my pictures going forward? Will the numbers repeat? Am I going to have a duplicate numbering system thing happening?
Am I correct in reading that you had over 10,000 photos on one memory card? If so, I can only imagine you are shooting on JPEG Small and never delete pictures off of the card. I hope that is not the case. Maybe I am just misunderstanding what is going on here.

If you hit 9999 the the camera should have started another folder called DSC200 on the card and started putting pictures in there.

More and more, I'm thinking this is what happened to the OP. That's why I use Lightroom, and just let it do the importing for me. If you buy it right now with a flash, you get it for peanuts:

No, No, the count is for the camera not the card.

I only just rolled over (can't believe I have taken that many pictures on it) and I have been using my initials before the numbering to help identify them for myself. It didn't occur to me to have to consider changing that format up.

I did finally get LR3 and I promise to get it out of the box this coming week, so I'm not sure what's in store for me to avoid issues with picture numbering. Maybe I will need to consider changing the file names as I import???

Are you downloaded into the same directory with all images?

You don't have to change the names, I use LR to create a folder that is the date that the picture was taken.

The solution to your problem is really simple.
1) After every outing with your camera, download the images to your hard drive.
2) Verify the images are on the hard drive and they look good with none that are corrupt.
3) Put your card back in the camera and format it.
4) Reset your counter to zero and you are ready to go for the next shoot.
That's the way I do it and it works great.

Note: If I am shooting more than one event (game), I will create a new folder and let the camera store the images there. That is much easier than just shooting a few blank frames and then starting the new event.

Hope this helps.
Mike

I disagree with resetting your counter....if that is the case and I am looking for a picture, I have 365 dsc-001's

Keep the sequential numbering, and use LR to place in folders at date take, imported or whatever you choose.

I am pretty basic on experience, so yes to using the same directory with all images.

So far I have been uploading the images from the card reader and dumping into folders labeled (whatever for the situation - date taken). I recently purchased LR3 and plan to get organized with that soon. My current in camera file naming is my initials along with whatever number sequence for the image the camera is on. I'm not familiar enough with LR yet to know if I should rename my image sequence when I import them?

Ok, that is your problem.

Stop importing all into one directory

Don't worry about renaming in the camera and don't reset the number. Use LR to create folders upon import by any criteria you set.

It is fool proof, you insert the card, lr reads the images and metadata, lr imports into correct directory. It also ignores duplicates (not dup file names, dup images into folders)

My 1D MK III has 270,000 clicks on it. Keeping my counter going continuously is nothing but a pain.

I have never had any trouble looking for a pic because I put my images into folders identified by date, and event. Simple as pie to go find "Blondes vs Brunettes" and quickly locate the image in that folder. Besides, by zeroing my counter, I know how many shots I have for that event. I know I can also see it in the camera info also.

Here is the problem with resetting and the OP, if she does that she will be over writing the original files over and over. She needs the use the folder structure like yours and file names are a moot point.
