Camera lens query - 11-13-2011, 10:37 PM

Hello all. I am new to the Pixtus site and need a question answered.
I am thinking about buying an DSLR camera and was wondering if the lenses that I have now for my 35 mm can be used on the newer digital cameras. This may seem like a real dumb question but I could save a lot of money by buying only the camera body without a lens. Thus being able to go for a better grade camera for the money I would have to pay for the package on a lower priced camera model. I have been looking at the Sony SLTA55V:
Any help would be appreciated.

Neil - Welcome!

What lenses do you have? If you can provide more details of what you have, you'll get more detailed answers.

1:3.5 28 to 1:4.5 50 mm M zoom Pentax

No, unfortunately they will not work on a Sony camera. Your best bet is to sell them. The only lenses that work correctly on a Sony camera are the Minolta AF lenses. The Tamron is potentially an adaptall lens, so that one would work if you bought the correct adaptall mount, but you would still need a midrange lens.

I am a Nikon guy so please verify this, but I believe if it is a Pentax (K mount) it will fit on a Canon body. The K mount has been around for a long time so you may be in luck there.

The lenses will not work on your camera. I posted right after you did initially, and edited my above post, to tell you that the lenses don't work on your camera, but by then you read my initial post already.

They aren't anything special really anyway, and they won't give you a very useful range. The 28-50mm especially is an odd lens, with a very limited zoom range, although I suppose it could work for portraits if they fit your camera. With digital, you want a walkaround zoom that starts at 18mm or less.

Being Pentax lenses, they will work on a Pentax camera. Pentax makes a great SLR system; the K-5 has been nothing but praised no matter where you look, and you'll be happy with it, but I wouldn't hinge my decision of which system to go with based on your $80 worth of lenses. Also, as I said, your Tamron may be an adaptall lens, which means that the mount pops off when you press the tab near it. Then, you can just add whatever mount you want, so you can make it work on Sony Alpha cameras. Keep in mind that it will be manual focus, though.

As some already said, your lenses have the K-mount bayonet: Pentax ME Super - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The K-5 is a pretty impressive camera, and uses the same sensor as the Sony A55, A580 and Nikon D7000 which has been an outstanding performer. The K-5 will also get you sensor based stabilization like the Sony, and in a weather sealed body.
