Went and purchased a 24-120mm f/4 for me to use on the D700, and Precision Camera in Austin had a D40X w/18-55mm lens there for a steal. So I added a 4 gb card, 52mm UV filter, a Green color peace-symbol strap, and now my 11 year old has her Christmas present. I asked the oldest and she told me that unless it was a D700 she did not want a camera. So she does not get a camera this year. Anyone using a D40X?
The D40X seems to be the perfect size for a starter/learning camera, and at 10 mp, it has enough to make her happy. Now the dogs will run in terror.....

I just bought a D7000 and I'm giving the D40x to the wife.

Murph...you might be able to hit your local Ritz/Wolf...they might have that rubber armor for the camera...for a steal...it used to be like $50 to $75 now I think they are about $10...might just save it from a drop...
I am with you...your older daughter will be pissed at Chrismas...but it will teach her a lesson...you make the most out of what you get...or you get a job...to buy it yourself...

She just told me that she wants an "underwater" camera. Oh well, she will just have to settle for an "above water" camera....

Eek! Just grab her a little backup Olympus or Pentax, that's what I did for my brother. Their last-gen underwater cameras go for pretty cheap.

Done! The oldest was easy. A bleeding edge Goth doll, iTunes card, computer game, and done.

Murph,
Can't see the pix from work but glad to hear that your daughter likes the gift. My 8 y/o daughter is constantly wanting to use daddys camera but has outgrown her small playschool camera too. Maybe a good idea for her in a couple of years.

I believe the D40x is one of the Nikon models that has an electronic shutter instead of a leaf shutter which means awesome high flash sync speeds.
