D800 vs D4

This is a discussion on D800 vs D4 within the Equipment Talk forums, part of the Photography Information category; I realize both of these cameras are "fictional" but do you think the D4 will have a picture quality commensurate ...

D800 vs D4 - 11-30-2011, 10:34 PM

I realize both of these cameras are "fictional" but do you think the D4 will have a picture quality commensurate to the price, than the d800? Do you all feel that a d3 has a better picture quality than the d700? It's the same sensor, right? So isn't the difference more in functionality of the camera rather than image quality?

I'm doing my budget for next year and I'm wondering if it's worth it to buy the better body. I shoot lots of low light photography.

d700 > d3 d3s> d700 d3x > *

depends on the order that it comes out.

I guess what I'm asking is if the d800 comes out before the d4, should I wait for the D4 instead of buying the d800?

Depends what you need and when. No one can answer that but you.

Getting better at lighting and shooting is going to help a lot more than any of those bodies will.

As great as owning a new body is ... learning the craft and utilizing great glass is even more valuable than a newer body. Unless there is absolutely a feature that only that one body has that you need.

Thanks guys, I totally agree that you can get more out of a camera by getting better. That was not my question though.

I was asking purely from a picture quality standpoint. Is the picture quality going to be identical between the d4 and the d800 since both will be using the same sensor? I am not asking about functionality or options or what I can do to get better results. Purely an eq question.

There is nothing to go on. The only rumor I have even seen is one may be 36MP. One may retain a built in grip, so I guess that is all you have to decide on.

Too hard to even attempt to give you advice on this until we see real specs on all the new cameras.

Agreed. What is kinda frustrating about it is time frame. The 800 should come out before the 4 right? Or at the same time? It will be frustrating if the 800 comes out and have no info to decide whether it worth it to wait for the 4 and for how long.

No one knows for sure that can talk about it. Everyone that does know for sure has signed a very strict NDA and won't talk about it.

So go practice until they are released.

If I remember correct the D3 came out first and then about a year later came the D7oo, so if they stay with the same pattern..... it should be the D4 and then the D8oo.
But they could come out together at the same time or who knows..... either way NIKON ROCKS!!!

good luck....

The D700 you own is a wonderful low light body. While I am sure that the technology will get better, you already have a great tool for low light. Plus adding some supplementary, well positioned light, will compensate for the physical limitations of your sensor. Shooting the D700 at ISO 1200 with a small touch of flash will give you some awesome pictures.

I am not suggesting that you don't upgrade, but only when you have tangible proof that the new bodies surpass easily what you've got today, and the money spent will generate more money than the depreciated body you have now.

Thanks man, I just need two camera bodies now and was wondering what the rumors were on these two models on how they compare.

Thanks everyone for the love.
