Nostalgia, light weight, high quality, rangefinder-like operation, APS-C sensor in point-n-shoot size, can't afford a Leica, makes you think before you snap and, like you mentioned, great images.

Agreed.... there has to be a reason why some big photographers are using it as their carry everywhere camera......

The pictures that come out it is simply amazing... One reason why I shoot jpeg with this camera. I did some raws and for the most part the jpegs looked a lot better. Plus try to fit a camera of this caliber into your pockets.. this even fits fine in my jeans :)

And most top notch optics made today. The only zoom I use regularly is my 70-200. The rest are just back ups in case my primes somehow break.

i got it for the aps-c sized sensor mainly.. now when i shoot at f/2 on my point and shoot i get a nice shallow depth of field.. couldnt get that with other point and shoots ive owned prior to this one because of the smaller sensors they had.

i dont mind NOT being able to change lenses etc. I like the fixed focal length. makes me not worry about what lens to use and/or what focal length. i just focus on my shot and composition.

ive heard lots of mixed feelings on the camera from various people.. i guess its much like any camera.. some like it and some do not.. just depends on what you like i guess.

The X100 has a sensor as large as your D300.

Zooms are over-rated; a zoom lens would make the X100 larger.

The lens has a quite large maximum aperture.

It has a real viewfinder, which works as either an optical viewfinder or electronic viewfinder.

I do not own an X100, but if I had not already bought a second 7D as a back-up for work, I might well have purchased an X100, because it renders very good JPEGs, and my job uses JPEGs.

I love the fixed focal length and I wouldnt want a zoom. I love the f/2 and I absolutely love the low light capabilities. The image quality out of this camera is fantastic and blows away any other small camera, especially in low light. And, of course, I love the portability and ruggedness of it. I carry an x100 with me at all times and I love using it. When I travel overseas, this is the only camera I take.

Compared to my DSLR:

Compared with another small camera I love:

I would like to see the X100 offered with a 35mm lens, so that with the crop factor it would render an image equivalent to near 50mm. I use a 35mm 1.4L on a 7D, more than any combination, for both work and my off-the-clock shooting, often at f/2. I very nearly bought an X100 at one point, and to help me decide, I put a 24mm 2.8 on a 7D, and walked around for a while doing test shots. I decided to wait and see if Fuji would make an X100 with a 35mm or 50mm lens.

As Paco just showed above, in the bottom image with the X100 and OM-1, a camera in this size range, with a fixed-focal-length lens, is very easy to love very much. My film camera in this range is the Nikon FM3A. I have an excellent Nikkor 50mm 1.2 lens, and have been considering a pancake lens such as a manual 50mm Nikkor 1.8 or Voigtlander 40mm 2.0 Ultron. There is something perfect about this size package, in my opinion. When I carry my FM3A, I do not tote normally tote an extra lens, and I do not own a Nikkor
Zoom.

Actually, I do have a couple of Canon zooms, and one, the EF-S 10-22mm, goes to work with me, for the times I need to make ultra-wide-angle shots. Of course, I dream of eventually owning fixed-focal-length ultra-wide lenses.

I'm leaning toward getting one of these. I never use a zoom, and one reason not mentioned so far is the lack of noise - no mirror slap. I'm growing to hate that sound in quiet situations.

Glad you mentioned that! The camera is amazingly quiet. Another reason to like it!

Another thing: Some venues and events do not allow SLR or DSLR cameras, but pocket cameras are OK. I did not see that being mentioned yet in this thread.

Thanks for reminding me about this. Looks like BH is out already, but Adorama still has some. I'm gonna get an extra battery, do the folks that own one of these recommend any other accessories that I couldn't live without?
