Suggestions for Neutral Density filter? - 12-08-2011, 11:31 AM

Hi all, I have to shoot some photos next week of some Automated Arc Gouging. I did a few while we were testing a few days ago and got decent results, but I had to have some ridiculous settings (f/32, ISO100, 1/40th). To get a streak from the sparks you have to drag the shutter to at least 1/40th, and to see anything other than the arc you have add more light from a strobe. If I partially block the arc it helps a fair bit, but that's not an option for all the angles I want to shoot.

We have welding lenses, but they are too dark to put in front of the lens (all you can see is the arc). Anyone have suggestions on a neutral density filter so that I have a little more flexibility in my settings? Thanks.

Ordered one of these through work. It should help me relax the settings a little bit at least.

B+W 67mm #106 Solid Neutral Density (ND) 1.8 Filter 65-1066157

Something like this:

Singh-Ray Filters: Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter

Expensive, but saves on multiple ND filters.

Another alternative to the Singh-Ray are the LCW vari-ND filter - Fader ND MK II
