Seems a bit much when the CF group is working on the new card spec.

I guess I don't shoot enough to notice downloading max 200 pics.

Now video...I can see this benefiting them.

In response to the CF standard: There are still thousands upon thousands of cf reading cameras, I doubt CF goes away (people probably thought that when SD came out).

True, but none of them touch that speed. Most were maxed two speeds ago. Yes, it could help read speed in the computer, but not in the cameras. I agree it will still benefit some, but I wonder what it means for the new spec cards. The original rumor said the D4 used the new spec, although with it and who knows what else being announced this month I would be surprised if they were not CF.

A bit much considering none of the cameras can keep up. The 1D Mark 3 writes at 11MB/s.

I guess I was wrong about the XQD cards being later: sonyalpharumors | Blog | Sony launches new XQD cards. (SR5) Yes future A99 camera will support this!

CF has industrial applications which will keep them around long after camera makers switch to something else that is cheaper to produce and takes less real estate inside a camera. A lot of those industrial applications need the pin and socket design, which is a weak link when there are frequent removals (ie; cameras) but an advantage when they are pretty much left installed forever and need high levels of shock/vibration durability while writing. In fact this is how I got my 1st 1gb CF card; it was a test bed for my company to use to replace SSD in pipeline pigs. Those SSD were running over $250k/100mb at that time. Alas the CF failed our tests (too slow) so they gave it to me. At the time it was leading edge, today, just a distant backup to a backup to a backup card.....

As far as Sony using it, I don't read too much into it, Sony after all used their own Memory stick forever and that never caught on either. Their use of MemStick has been a factor in their maintenance of also-ran status in many product lines as no one else picked it up (and not for technical reasons; the lack of acceptance was mostly said to be around licensing costs). them switching to the XQD sounds more like face-saving than anything else and allows them to move away from MS. It makes me think they've got a tie in to the licencing revenues, meaning perhaps they own part of XQD as well? Sony has always made quality stuff, but some of their business decisions have raised eyebrows over the years.

This time it is a new standard from the CF group, not just a Sony thing. The MS was a bit of a mess. It was Sony and Sandisk on that one. Fortunately Sony went SD on the newer cameras, or SD/MS capable slots. My NEX can take either. Good thing the form factor was close enough to allow it.

Tom,

That's what I was wondering. I'm shooting a Nikon D3 and it writes at 35MB/s. So is a card like this going to help me? Right now I'm using the 90MB/s SanDisk Extreme Pro. Is my camera the limiting factor here?
