Looks like they decided to bump up the MP again, but with a big increase in sensor size. Is this their answer to the mirrorless cams?

DPreview calls it a large sensor compact: Canon PowerShot G1 X Preview: 1. Introduction: Digital Photography Review

It is bigger than a m4/3 sensor.

Seems like a pretty fair camera. The IQ should be excellent with the new sensor and IS. I regularly shoot a stop faster with m4/3 gear which might be a concern for me. I wonder if the processor and imaging pipeline are fast enough to support Raw shooting without delays. Slow Raw processing would be a deal breaker for me.

looks like they have finally decided to make a pro level point and shoot.

Nice large sensor size, and given that I can easily carry my g9 with no problem, this one should not be a big deal either. Hopefully it doesn't have the shutter lag that comes with other g series cameras.

I would rather it had a fixed lens with f/2.0 than a zoom starting at f2.8, but the rather large sensor and ability to use my existing flashes and ST-E2 make this an attractive product to consider. The negative factor is the price; is it a good value for my budget? $800 is a big piece of a 5D2. I would like to see how it handles, compared to something like a Fuji X100.

This site has a ISO 12,800 sample that was from a RAW image processed in DPP:
