I bought mine to deal better with low light than my D90 and bought afford a D700. So far no issues at all and love the camera.

I am looking at stepping up from the D80 and I know it is leaps and bound above that model. I just wanted to know what your experience was with it and if it has lived up to your expectations and what might be annoying about or what might be better than what you thought, things like that in general. Was this an upgrade for you or was this your first DSLR?
Iam just a hobby photographer and I lean towards wildlife and such.

I love mine. great resolution and sharpness excellent colors and great AF. It is very good at high ISO if you need to go there with it. I have used mine to shoot everything from select soccer to studio portraits and I really love the images I get out of it.

Hm, most of the reviews online are by people who used/own the camera. Not sure why it'd turn into a Nikon bashing thread as most of the users of this body are satisfied with it. The information you seek has been out awhile in forums and reviews. I know because I read much of it before I purchased mine. But, I'll play along.
I bought it specifically for the 16MP. The SOOC samples people put out showed it was better than the D90 @ noise handling. I shoot 90-95% close up and macro so that extra space for cropping is great. The new AF system is awesome. Leagues ahead of the 11-point of the D90. I use it mostly in AF-C if I am out in the field. If under controlled conditions and on a tripod, AF-S. I wish more buttons were programmable. I wish there were more buttons to be programmable. I still don't understand why Nikon doesn't put the ISO button on the right hand side of the camera. I have ran into two problems: the shutters throwing oil onto the low pass filter in front of the sensor and the video mode failing during fast motion (the camera moving, not the subject). I may have to send it in about both issues. Neither of which really bother me as I use video only for documentary purposes and I can get the sensor cleaned locally anyway. The D7k sensor and processing engine play really well with Sigma EX glass, just FYI.

Brand bashing doesn't happen very much here but straying off topic is a constant problem.
Ask about camera or lens X and you are immediately bombarded with multiple reasons why you should buy Y and/or Z.
Most users of the D7000 are more than satisfied with it.

My wife is very happy with her D7000, which she uses mostly in low light, in Manual mode, with an SB-800 flash, for official (gov't entity) purposes. Switching from gov't-issued D300/D200 cameras to the D7000 did, however, cause some amount of fumbling with controls, changing settings unintentionally. (I bought her the D7000 because the issued cameras were showing their age, she was getting tired of having to reset-up cameras repeatedly, and she was recovering from a rotator cuff injury, making every ounce important. A recent rule change started allowing the use of personal cameras.)
FWIW, the head photographer at her agency uses a D7000, though I don't know if it belongs to the taxpayers or is personally owned.

The production studio I help out uses a D7000. And the few times that I had played with that camera have been real nice.
I have a D300s, but that D7000 takes some great photos for the cost.
It is definitely lighter, but a tad heavier than your D80 (I use to own one also). The controls are in the same place and the rubber grip feels very sturdy. It's nice to have dual slots, but being that you are at the moment just doing it for a hobby, I doubt you
will even need to worry about data-overflow.
And when you need some video, the quality of video off the D7000 is actually quite nice.
Good luck with deciding on your next camera.

A year ago I jumped from a D40 to the D7000 - this has been a huge jump for my photography. The D7000 does an amazing job in the low light situations - I often photograph bicycle events in the evening on a velodrome where the lighting is not good and for the most part it took all the frustrations out of the low light issues I had with the D40. Investing in some nice glass helped as well - so the d7000 paired with my 70-200 2.8 is a really nice combo. I have taken a class to help on the learning curve aspects of the camera, there are a lot! Don't be fooled, this camera has a lot of stuff on it and if you don't take the time to learn about it and what it can do for you - it's a lot of money and investment so be sure to take that into consideration I'm very happy with this camera! Good luck! Susan

I love the dual slots not so much for overflow but I store raw to slot 1, and jpg to my eyefi card in slot 2 which goes to either my laptop or Toshiba pad.

Using the Pro or Mobile? This gives me a good reason to swing by Best Buy. They have the Eyefi on sale.
I use the D7000 as my backup, it's never failed to perform and produce.
The only problem I encountered was shooting fast action shots. It tends to hunt a little longer in AF mode, than my D700.
