Canon Picture Styles: Neutral v. Faithful - 01-14-2012, 05:17 PM

When comparing the two picture styles (Neutral and Faithful) the settings both say they are "0, 0, 0, 0".. so what makes them different?

Thanks!

Sean:

The styles themselves are how the camera sees and records the colors. The number sequence you mention is for modifying how these styles capture sharpness, contrast, saturation and color tone (red/blue/yellow).

The following link may help answer your questions better:

Thank you Michael. I had read these before, but became confused when i realized the number sequences for both of them were the same. I suspect the difference in the two PS is no with the numbers, but something I can not readily see?

Which picture styles do you use typically? I have shot mainly with Snapshot Portrait (seems to be pretty versatile insdoors and outdoors) and most of my photos are of people.

The number settings allow you to set the various styles the way you prefer to see images straight from the camera without much processing. I shoot in Manual mode and I use a modified Neutral style setting on both my cameras. I prefer more Sharpness and Contrast and leave the Saturation and Color Tone set at zero.

However, I do mainly nature and macro photos. From what I have read for people you would probably want a softer image. I also shoot in RAW so anything I have set up can be completely changed if the outcome is not what I had expected.

Take your camera and take a photo of the same subject using all the styles. On the computer you will definitely see a difference in colors from one style to another. Make sure if you shoot them out of sequence that you record which is what style. Narrow it down to one or two on the color. Then, do it again, playing with the numbers until you get a balance you would like to see in most of your photos.

Good luck.

in lightroom 3, on the development tab, under the camera calibration section, there is a selection called "profile"

If you are shooting in raw you should notice that the choices under that include all of the picture styles that are default in the camera and drastically alter the way that the image is presented in the preview.

These same choices are available on one of the pages of Adobe Camera Raw's handler as well

Kent, thank you! I haven't even thought about playing with the picture styles in LR3.

Faithful means the image will never cheat on you
Neutral means the image won't care if you cheat on it.
