So I just stepped up to the plate and bought a 1D Mk IV. I have a 1D Mk III, and my wife has been shooting a gripped 7D. One needs to go. Would you give up the 8 MP (drop from 18 to 10) for all the other benefits of the 1D Mk III? I am not sure which to sell. Both are pristine with under 30K on the shutter.

We already have a 5D Mk II for the nature shots and portraits and a 50D for the 14 year old. So, all the other bases are covered.

I'd sell the 50D and let the kid use the 7D. But I would probably lean towards keeping the 1D3 over the 7D. When you need megapickles, you have other options available.

I am sure my kid would agree with you but he is SOL. Until he shows some enthusiasm, no chance. His 50D is gripped with a 300mm F4L and 1.4x TC for birding and sports. Kid turns 15 in 2 months, and I offered to buy him an old FJ40 or CJ7 and teach him how to build it into a sweet off road ride. Budget was wide open as long as he learned how to do the mechanical work from me along the way. Not interested. I would have killed for that when I was 16. Most kids today don't appreciate a 7D.

Nope. Just deciding if the wife would be better off shooting the 1D3.

Dude, would you buy me an old FJ40 and teach me how to build it up?

As for your son, take away the 50D and get something for him like a Pentax ME Super (my first SLR). Kids today!

As for whether the megapixels of the 7D are worth keeping it over the 1D Mark III, do you guys do a lot of printing? If not, the added ruggedness of the Mark III would win. Although it doesn't share a battery pack with the Mark IV, does it?

Just a thought here... what does your wife think? Which one would she prefer (even if it isn't the "right" answer from a technical standpoint)? Go with that.

She wants to keep whichever is better. I told her not to worry about which one I can sell for more. She is open to the best choice. She mainly uses the high fps for shooting birds or our son's cross country meets.

Does she ever shoot video? That's the only reason I would keep the 7D. With the sports shooting, a few video clips might be nice for putting together a slideshow/video keepsake.

Sell the Mk III. I'm still looking for one. :)

Seriously, go out with both and make it a user test and see which is more comfortable and what the image results look like.

umm...no on the cruiser.

we do not do a lot of printing, but we should. it is embarrassing to have so many good shots that we do not have printed and frames. the Mk3 and Mk4 share batteries, but the 7D is different. the 7D ones are the same as a 5DMk2.
