to replace Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4 - 01-18-2012, 12:09 PM

I have a canon 7D camera. For glasses I currently have
Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4
Sigma 50 f/1.4
Sigma 8-16
Canon 70-200 IS II F/2.8L

I am thinking of replacing the Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4 , but cannot decide on which one.
15-55 EF-S? I heard it is a good glass, but some said it is a notch below L quality
24-70 f/2.8L? I am leaning to this one, but this glass is old
24-105 f/4L? newer glass, but don't have f/2.8

Any suggestion?

well it really depends on what faults you find in the Sigma 17-70...

Is it the range? is it the non constant f/2.8? Is it quality related?

I took one, switch glass, then took the other. Both taken at iso-100, handheld.
I think I don't mind f/4, just the the sharpness of Sigma 17-70 is not quite what I wanted.

If you have the means the 24-70 f/2.8L is excellent. That said, the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 is also excellent and almost as nice. So if you are on a budget you may want to look into that as another option.

have you sent it to Sigma to see if it needs to be calibrated? I've seen Sigma get a lot of flack on the boards for non sharp lenses out of the box, but once sent off, they're like a whole new lens.

If you insist on replacing it tho... From the ones in your list...

I think you meant EF-S 18-55 IS...id consider that a downgrade.

24-70 2.8 would be nice if you dont mind the range. You'd be losing a bit on the wide end, would still get to 70, would get 2.8... and get a big step up in quality.

if you dont mind the f/4 and want to save a few bucks - spring for the 24-105L. It's SO versatile!

You can almost buy five of the sigmas for the price of the 70-200. I wouldn't expect it to be as good. I have that sigma lens. It's sharp enough, but you can do better...for a whole lot more money.

I have an SD14 I shoot on rare occasions. Use wise replaced it with a Nikon D40.

Very as in extremely slow write to a card. One needs several hands or extra fingers for the programming/setting of the camera. Something along the lines of hold down button A while pushing button B seven time to access menu C.
Not precise but conveys the message.

Great for tripod shots of flowers, landscapes, etc or photos taken in a slow casual way. Took it to Hagerman Wildlife Reserve = Arghh!

Old eyes, cataracts and partial color blind so my comments on color may be off for the rest of the world. To me they are intense.

Actually I have two SD14s. I am rank amateur, there is a pro user on this site you may want to ferret him out.

+1 to what Lewis said...

Not a Pro-Shooter...but do have several SD14's that I use...and have been very happy with...once you learn it's quirks and how to work around them...they behave like an old film camera...

Shoot me or Lewis a PM with your questions...I am sure one of us can answer them...
