Strobist: Bailing on the Nikon D4

I thought this was a pretty interesting article. The gist of it is that even thought the D4 is an incredible camera, he is better served by a medium format digital because he doesn't do much sports work and mainly does portraits.

Ya, i have absolutely no interest in this camera for studio work.
A quick look at the specs makes it obvious that my current D700 is a better choice until the D800 is released.

His decision makes perfect sense to me for what he shoots.

Makes perfect sense. If I'm CEO of a large corporation I want a shoe with a leather sole. Not Nike's latest track shoe. It's a bit much for the board room. Not to mention the funny looks!

36MP would be a lot of pixels crammed into a tiny space. I feel like the 22MP on the 5D2 is a little too much. For a FF sensor, I really think 12-18 is the sweet spot.

A few years ago people said 6-10 was the sweet spot. As the sensor tech evolves it will keep growing.

It is disturbing how quickly I adapted to 24MP.

I suppose 36 on a FF isn't a whole lot worse than 18 on a aps-c sensor though. I know my D7000 is 16 and my old D90 is 12 and both have been fine for anything I will ever want to print.

Maybe so, but Canon has had the 22MP 5D2 out for almost 4 years and their new FF camera is 18MP while Nikon's is 16MP.

True, but Canon's latest is a 1D/1Ds hybrid of sorts, and Nikon WILL have a high MP monster coming I am sure. Nikon still went from 12 to 16 on their low MP FF.

No idea how that will pan out, but nikon isn't one to just throw MP's at their pro camera's just to outdo the competition. I'll be holding all comments until it becomes something other than vaporware and we see some real world shots.
