Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II extender - 01-22-2012, 02:29 PM

Hi,

I'm a newb here, and have the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II I use with my Conon 40D. Which model # of Telephoto extender do I need to get out to around 300mm? Thanks in advance.

Either the 1.4x or 2.0x extender will get you there.

Take the focal length 70 up to 200 and multiply by the camera's crop sensor (1.6) and then the extender (1.4 or 2.0) to get the new focal length. For example, 70 x 1.6 x 1.4 = 157.

Keep in mind they will reduce your light.

I would stick with the 1.4x extender as the 2.0x will reduce the image quality. I have both and only under rare circumstances would I consider using the 2.0x. At 200mm your lens will be 280mm (without converting for the crop factor of the body) and will loose roughly 1 f stop of light (f2.8 becomes f/4).
