I'm not using one but apparently the OS is so good that they're being sued by Nikon for it. I'd love to have one but I the Nikon will always have the resale value. Should you ever sell it you'll get much closer to what you paid for it than if you buy a new Sigma 70-200 os. Now you could always buy the Sigma used too but I don't see those as much.

That's been part of the problem is I haven't seen the Nikon version sitting out there much lately either for sale. Hoping to come accross one of those and I read about the lawsuit along with the standard online reviews and it sounds like a decent lens for the money.

is Sigma getting sued by Canon as well? I was looking for either this or the v1 of Canon's but couldn't decide on which to get.

From what I've read it's strictly Nikon so I'd imagine it has to do with the "system" they are using for their OS since just having image stabilization is not patented. Maybe they reversed engineered the Nikon system and Nikon found out, still not sure myself. Could just be one of the big boys pushing their weight around too, all speculation on my part since I haven't read the fine details and can't stand reading lawyer speak.

It's only Nikon. Nikon says Sigma ripped off their VR technology. There's nothing proven and no "guilty" parties. Sigma is still making the lenses and there's no reason not to buy because of that lawsuit IMO. I was just putting it out there to say the OS must be pretty darn good!

brewercm - I see the VR1 come up on fredmiranda buy/sell forums pretty often.
I see the Sigma's much less so but occasionally.

Thanks, I'll have to check that out. I don't get onto that site a whole lot anymore.

As for resale value, that won't matter when you consider the $1000 you will save up front on the initial purchase.

$1000 saved? How so? Nikon VR1 used (not available new) is typically $1400 - $1500. Sigma 70-200 OS new is ~$1400. Don't see them used that often.. maybe $1000? Definitely not a $1000 savings.
I'm guessing you're thinking of the VR2. OP asked about VR1.

I'm game either way but guessing if I went route of VR II (which would probably be the only upgrade from the other two) would put me back another $600 or so.
Thanks for all the valuable information though.

I should disclose that I don't own the Nikon version and if the two were the same price I would go for the Nikon. I do love my Nikon lenses! Quote:

brad | Yes, I was referring to the VR2 so I could compare apples to apples. On Amazon the is $2,396.95 and the is $1,399. So that is a difference of $997.95. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
