Canon equipment advice - 01-29-2012, 09:57 AM

I'm looking to add a 17-40 f4 to my lens arsenal. I'm OK with a good used one, at the right price (not those ridiculous e-place ones). I've found one paired with an EOS 3 locally, so at least I'd have the opportunity to inspect it before purchase. The total price seems reasonable, and the present owner doesn't want to sell them separately. I prefer not to get any of the crop-body only lenses, as I hope to add a MarkV-II in the future.

I've asked for the shutter activation count and purchase date, as well as history (professional use, etc.) Any additional advice on things that I should look for or ask about on either the lens or the body? I'll probably keep the body for now, and use it as a backup/second body until I can get the MarkV.

Thanks for your time,
Bill

an eos 3 is a film camera -- so keep that in mind when pricing

and I am not sure what a mark V is -- are you talking about a 5d mark II?

Thanks, Kent. Yes, I know the EOS 3 is a film model, last manufactured in 2007, I think. I'm an old-time film guy, some of the time. I once had a modest home darkroom, some 35 or so years ago...

And yes, I did mean the 5D Mark II - my bad

I've got an offer in for $650, which seems reasonable if the body and lens are in good shape considering that the lens is on offer from B&H or Adorama for $707 right now...

I think the 17-40 has a stellar reputation, and in general the f/4 models of zoom lenses tend to be better at f/4 than the much more expensive f/2.8 equivalent focal length zooms from canon when stopped down to f/4.

if you want the lens, and are getting it for cheaper and then they throw in a perfectly good eos 3 -- sounds like a great deal to me

The 17-40 is a great lens, sharp wide open. I'm sure you already know, but check for dust, scratches, dents, fungus, focus speed/smoothness when you see it. 650 sounds like a good combo deal.
