Question regarding aperature... - 01-29-2012, 10:11 AM

I know that the aperature setting controls the incoming light.
But is the actual mechanism in the lens or in the camera?
Also is the aperature mechanism location the same on film and
digital cameras? My thinking is that it is always in the camera and
not in the lens. Please advise. Thanks, Patrick

the aperture mechanism is in the lense. on the older manual bodies you can fiddle with the aperture but on the newer autofocus bodies (canon) you wont see the aperture blades until the split second you take the photo.

Most cameras have DOF preview button on the camera body and this will close the lens down to the aperture setting on the lens... I use mine all the time to check DOF

The blades are in the lens, but most SLRs are controlled on the camera body. Some are mechanical control, some are electronic.
