Nikon 24-120mm F4 - Focusing Issue - 01-30-2012, 02:47 PM

I'm sending in my recently purchased Nikon 24-120mm F4 for warranty. There seems to be an issue with it's focusing ability. I use it exclusively on a D7000. Seems that no matter what AF mode I'm in (AF-A, AF-S, AF-C), what focus point I use (or how many), or how well lit a scene is (from low light indoors to direct unfiltered sunlight), I just can't get it to focus like I can all my other lenses. Nor does it focus as snappy as the copy I rented for the Ren Fest last year, which made me fall in love with the lens. So, I'm sending it in today for repair. I don't need it for anything planned until the second week of March, so I figure that is plenty of time (and I'm renting a 70-200 and a 24-70 for that trip anyway).

My question is does anyone else have this problem with the lens or had to send it in for it?

Well, just got off the phone with a Nikon rep. They recieved the lens on the 3rd of Feb. Logged it into their system on the 6th of Feb. Looks like lens was malfunctioning (although the rep didn't go into detail). It's being covered under warranty. Should be back to me within 7 to 10 business days.

It was a "Cat. B2" repair. According the Nikon site that is a "Moderate Repair: Major Parts Replaced" type fix. Doesn't say what was replaced, but the lens was definitely not working correctly.

So, I got the lens back today.

This is what they did:

"RPR Focusing Mechensim"
"RPL Encoder"

Everything else checked out good and they cleaned it... not that it needed it, but it's on the paperwork. Focuses spot on even in low light now!
