NEW Pentax mirrorless - APS-C K-mount - 02-02-2012, 08:03 AM

Pentax announces K-01 K-mount APS-C mirrorless camera: Digital Photography Review

Nice to see Pentax join the APS-C mirrorless party, and theirs is K-mount so all their current lenses should work. Less compact, but nice to keep the same mount.

Unlike Sony, but like Olympus, they kept the sensor shift body IS.

Of course most of the comments are about how ugly it is.

I think it's primarly problem is that the same size as a DSLR, just without the mirror. This is required because they are using k-mount lenses and you need the same backfocus distance.

However, I think it destroys the primarly advantage of mirrorless: size

That and it doesn't have a viewfinder and, as mentioned, it fell off the ugly tree

Given that it's K-mount and uses the same batteries, flashes and GPS as my K5, I'll probably sell my Pen kit and use this instead. Image quality will definitely be better (match or exceed my K5), and my small primes will work great on it. The price is nice, too. $250 cheaper than the new Olympus offering should help sell a few, though the usual complaints about lack of a viewfinder will stop some people from buying.

Wish it was a tad smaller, but only so much you can do and keep the same mount.

BTW, it's available for pre-order from B&H and Adorama.
