CPS Members with Big Lenses Question - 02-02-2012, 12:53 PM

I want to send my 600 in for a "check and clean" that we get with membership to Canon Professional Services and have a question.

This thing is heavy, and expensive. When you send something like this in, do you insure it and do you use UPS/FEDEx or what?

I checked with my home-owners (I have a schedule for my camera equipment) and they said that as soon as it leaves my possession it is no longer covered by my policy.

Thanks for any advice.

insurance is definitely a mysterious and esoteric thing.

insure with UPS/fedex for whatever the replacement cost is. since the lens is over $1000, you will have to take it down to an actual fedex/UPS facility (not a kinkos or the like) or schedule a pickup for them to inspect your packaging before acceptance.

have you called canon to see what they recommend?

I sent in my 300 for work and you bet it was insured.

Don't you remember that old luggage commercial and how bags were handled? Those same apes work at FedX, UPS, etc now.

I sent my 400 2.8 in a year ago to have the focus adjusted. Better believe I insured it for the replacement value. From what I remember, the insurance was 5x the shipping cost. But when you consider I couldn't replace the lens, I couldn't take the gamble.

You insure it for replacement value. It's not cheap, but it's considerably cheaper than buying it again. Yes, UPS or FedEx, your choice. Canon will pay to ship it back.
