Canon ate Nikon's lunch for years; it is good to see Nikon truly competing again, and I say this as a Canon shooter. I could do my job well enough with either Nikon or Canon products. (Actually, I have nice Nikon film cameras, too, and my wife uses a Nikon D7000 at work and on her own time, so we are a CanoNikon household.) | It is not just the launches/announcements from Nikon. The President & CEO of Canon announcing his resignation. Makes me wonder what's next and what direction will the company take moving forward. | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. On the original topic, what I did not clearly state in my earlier post was that I saw the 7D, not the 60D, as the logical successor to the 50D. I hope that Canon does continue its APS-C semi-pro line of cameras, whatever alpha/numeric designation is used, though I see my future primarily in the 5D+ and 1D lines. | | | |

I kinda like the direction that canon is headed with the consolidation of the 1d back to a single body (fast focus, large resolution, fast frames per second) and then leaving folks at the mid tier to decide if they want a sports/action oriented camera (7d), or a studio/portrait oriented camera(5d).
I like what the 7d does and I like what the 5d does as well, and if you need both, then there is always the 1dx which looks to be a combination of the two (plus a lot of bells and whistles)
I think many 5d users need a more robust focus system, where as there is not as much of a "need" for faster frames per second.
Same thing goes for 7d users -- they need the fps, ISO, and focus upgrades, but not as much need as want full frame. I'd like full frame on my 7d, but I don't really "need" it.
If they were to upgrade the 5d to the focus system that is in the 7d, and then pump up the next 7 with something akin to the nikon focus matrix, they could maintain the same lineage of cameras without really cannibalizing either one.
---------------------------
Nevermind -- I'll take care of it myself!

I know I want high iso performance on 7D, but I think it will be hard for to do better than full frame sensor. | | | |

Love the 7d. Have heard there might be an upgrade this fall. I don't think it will be enough upgrade at this point to matter. Give it another year and let the 5dMkIII hype wear off. The next generation of the 7 will blow away the 5 and half the price. Should be interesting.

In comparisons, it is pretty well even with the D7000, its main competitor, despite the fact that the D7000 costs 35% more. | Everyone I know with a 60d seems to be rather happy with it. It could use some better ISO capabilities but then again most cameras could. | | | |

Thinking back to last night, when I was shooting digital image evidence photos at a rather large, complex crime scene, with crappy mixed lighting, I am very happy with my working pair of 7D cameras. I would like a second memory card slot option, for a bit more peace of mind, but then, I have yet to lose any images from a CF card before the upload. (Touch wood! I hope I didn't just jinx myself!) The only true back-up, however, is a second set of images shot by a separate camera, anyway.
My 7D cameras have always done what I have asked of them, allowing me to work much more quickly than with the older 40D in low light, with more keepers, more consistent behavior with flash, and MUCH less fiddling with white balance. I perceive no real need for a Mark II, for my purposes. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
