The 5D3 is supposedly a 61-AF-point, 7FPS 22MP machine. Not sure there is a need for a 7D2 to fit between a 70D and a 5D3.

From the video guys I know, it is a really solid camera. Makes sense from a step standpoint in the Rebel->60D->7D->5D2->1D4 and I believe it carried the same sensor as the 7D.
In comparisons, it is pretty well even with the D7000, its main competitor, despite the fact that the D7000 costs 35% more.

No more magnesium alloy body.
No more CF card.
No more AF micro adjustment.
Changed the remote port so the d series remotes no longer work with it.
And I think a few other things. It's more like a Rebel-X.

I knew about the SD and plastic body things. Didn't know about the lack of MicroFocus adjustment and the change in remote port.
But it also came in cheaper than the 50D and much cheaper than its competitor. And it had the new articulating screen and had much better video options than the D7000. Other than moms, most people I see with the 60D are videographers, who seem to like the screen and the weight.

I actually prefer the heft of the magnesium alloy body.
Put a 24-70 or a 24-105 on one of the plastic bodies, and it becomes very front heavy as well.

And for me especially i wanted these "pro" body features at the time i was shooting a Nikon D90 and didnt want to get a D300 or D300s. So after shooting 40D and renting the 50D for a while, i skipped the 60D and got myself the 7D.
I just didn't like how the 60D felt in my hands among other things.....did i mention that articulating screen thing? hate it!(not much of a video guy myself)

| Then shop for a body that costs more than $900.
I agree on plastic bodies. I can't shoot them. I need the heft. I can't even handle not having a battery grip. Neither manufacturer is going to slit their own throat by offering a camera with lots of pro features for less than $1000. I remember especially not liking the SD card and lack of a metal body, but the camera is what it is and it is very good at what it does.
I've never used an articulating screen except on a G11. I am fairly sure I wouldn't like it and I really hope the 5D3 doesnt have one.

I am not a fan of the articulating screen - just another point of failure. The only benefit of the 7D line is the crop factor. As much as I love it, my next body will be full frame unless their is a solid option for a 10-22mm at f/2 .8

I am one of many that thinks the 16-35mm 2.8L II is a piece of junk (along with the 24-70mm 2.8L I)

And I think a few other things. It's more like a Rebel-X. | Agreed! I wanted a magnesium alloy body and micro AF adjustment, so yes, I saw the 60D as a downgrade from a 50D. I went from 40D to 7D, and later added a second 7D. The 7D does everything I would need a cropped-frame camera to do, and fits my hands so very well; the only thing I have wished the 7D had was a second memory card slot. Therefore, a 7D Mark II has not been on my wish/dream list, whereas I have been paying attention to the rumors of successor to the 5D2, and even wondering if I might be able to someday afford a 1D-series.

I don't expect either one to always have an immediate answer to the other's new products. Canon ate Nikon's lunch for years; it is good to see Nikon truly competing again, and I say this as a Canon shooter. I could do my job well enough with either Nikon or Canon products. (Actually, I have nice Nikon film cameras, too, and my wife uses a Nikon D7000 at work and on her own time, so we are a CanoNikon household.) | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
