The D5100 is a excellent choice. With an almost undetectable amount of light you can shoot at 102,400 ISO. Very grainy? True plus only monochrome. That is a small price to pay for. Not disturbing their, yeah, finally asleep mode.

Believe there are now two generations of the Nikon 50mm 1.8. The first gen will not autofocus on the D5100 I believe the second generation will.

We have five, 3 girls and 2 boys. Sleep is good.
One daughter had a prolonged nursing experience until one toddler morning it dawned on my wife that daughter would, after the school and work goers left, climb onto her lap while handing her the morning paper and ball point pen. The only thing lacking was the paper being opened to the daily crossword puzzle. Yes Mom works crosswords in ballpoint.

They can be sneaky.

My advice would be to go with the kit lens since it is a zoom from mildly wide angle (bunch of kids in the house) to a "normal lens." At F5.6 or so, it will give you enough depth of field to make getting the kids (more than one?) in focus easier.

Rather than a fast lens, I would recommend an external flash bounced off the wall.
