Grip for a Sony A65 - 02-18-2012, 04:30 PM

Sony decided not to make a grip for the A65 so challenge accepted. :) I had a old grip from a Sony A350 and started modding away so far this is what I have. The final grip will just be an extra shutter button and better holding and that's it

I have figured out how to use both batteries in the grip and am now working on how to use the shutter :)

About to cut the circuit then make the connections to run both batteries

I did not remove the door. The wires are small enough that the door shuts with them coming out. There is a little notch in the door for the blue battery release and it leaves enough room

It looks like both batteries will not work with the camera, with both installed it gives a "incorrect battery"" error. I have tried a few other ways but still no luck. O well it was worth a try and at least I will not have to remove the grip to change batteries

Craig...you probably have to put a resister in place somewhere...what's probably going on is the grip is using the batteries in series...and...your output on the Mamp is probably too high for the camera to take....if you can put an inline resister don't know what it would be...you can probably git it ito work...as far as the shutter...you need to know what the Pin-Out is at the top of the battery compartment in the camera...you should have 6 to 9 gold plates for pins to attach too...once you figure out which one is the shutter...you should be ok...two should be for focusing...then the sensor focusing...then the other functions for the camera...

Hope this helps....

Thanks tc but the A65 does not have contacts inside the battery compartment that is why there is no grip from sony. I am just going to get a cheep wired remote shutter and splice into the shutter button on the grip and run the cable out the left site to the remote port

I just tried a bunch of resisters and found one (1M i think) that got the C voltage close to stock ~3.08v but when I put the batteries back into the camera "incorrect battery" showed back up. :( It is not that hard to slide out the tray and put the other battery in so I will just do that

The Light bulb just went off. I am going to implant a wireless trigger receiver into the grip so I can have a wireless trigger built in and the shutter button on the grip to use :)

**shutter update**

I went around town looking for wireless shutters with receivers that are about the same as the sony battery size and I fond a Vivitar Canon one that was almost perfect

Here is a photo of it before I tore it open

Figuring out the pin out of the wireless shutter release

Figured out the pin out of the wireless shutter release

Wireless shutter receiver modded to fit in the battery compartment

stay tuned for more :)
