Picture Storage Device - 03-25-2005, 01:04 PM

For anyone living near a Fry's who needs a portable picture storage unit of the type that Leslie was looking for before she left. Fry's has one in their add today, 03-25-05. It is a Wolverine brand, which may be their own name, but it looks a lot like a Volsonic unit in the picture. It is a 40GB, 6 in 1 reader, for $140. This is a very good price. It may be only USB 1.1, since it doesn't state USB 2, but $140 is a good deal for 40 GB's of storage.

That is a good deal!! I had to pay $200 bucks for my 40 gig X's drive pro. Mine uses USB 2.0 though, and that does make a big difference (IMO) when you're talking up to 40 gigs of stuff to transfer.

Went to Fry's on-line outlet and it is USB 2.0. I priced this same unit not too long ago and it was slightly over $200, so for this price and portability, I had to order one... :)

also oyu may consider what I did..

I had an old laptop hard drive laying around (20 gig) so I bought the Xs drive shell for $79. Its the older Xs drive and I have had it for a few years, but if you have access to a used laptop drive, buying the shell for a portable storage unit with the 6in1 card reader may be a cheaper way to go

Local Fry's here in Houston has one (I think it's 40GB) on sale this weekend for about $130.

I picked up the 20Gig version from Fry's the other day. It was on sale for $119. Sounds like I should take it back for the 40 Gig version if it's only $10 more. With the USB 1.1 it took 8+ mins to transfer one 512MB card, still debating with myself whether that is acceptable.

Before you go out an buy one of these consider the transfer time, both from CF card to device and device to computer.

Some of these storage device take soooo long to transfer from the CF card to the device they are almost useless.

That may be the case (think USB 1.1 speed), but it sure beats carrying a notebook with you during a shoot - or running out of media!

My X's Drive II is not the fastest in copying from the CF (USB 1.1), but I've got enough CF cards (5GB worth) that I use it more for backup than to keep going.
