On the fence decision - 03-29-2006, 09:22 AM

After attending a few photoshop workshops, and having a few discussions with other photographers it seems the larger majority of folks use a Mac laptop. I entered the computer industry 20+ years ago where I was actually having to use an ascii editor for word processing, hence, a lot of changes and progressive changes have occurred. What is a challenge for me at the moment, is that my applications on my laptop, my home p.c, my wifes legal p.c, etc., are all windows based. My Toshiba laptop is starting to demonstrate it's age, so I'm considering a new laptop. As I stated though, I am concerned about having to "purchase" duplicate programs that I already own the rights to use on a p.c, but won't work on a MAC. Has anyone gone through this same experience/transition. Any advice ?

And with everything said and done, will a MAC "really" perform and be that much better ? I mean is it similar to Canon/Nikon thing ?

Thanks alot.
Randy

I've always heard that MAC's are best for graphics work but I really can not say for sure, I would be interested to hear from the people that have used both.

All I've used for graphics is macs... about 12-13 years now. But it used to be back in the day that you couldn't get the software for pc. Now you can. And the majority of web graphics for instance are done on pc. So your analogy to nikon/canon is probably correct. And this coming from a die-hard mac guy.

I to come from the age of large mainframs and had used windows since it came out on various platforms. But last year I decided to go with a 20 inch iMac for all my digital work and have been very happy. I just bought Photoshop CS2 for it and use open source for every thing else on it. I most likely get a new but very cheap (under 500 dollar pc) for Office but that's all.

I just find OS-X more stable than windows (after all UNIX is under it) and application installation and deinstallation a breeze. There is NO DAMN REGISTERY!!!.

The next large tower system I get will be a big mac as will my next note book. We've been testing a new Intel mac notebook in the IR group and it is a thing of grace and beauty.
