Alien Bees Bulb Replacement - 07-01-2006, 11:59 AM

So my light unit has a bulb thats busted and only the base remains.. the filament, glass, etc.. has all been damaged and fell out... I dont know how.. this is the modeling light which is just a simple 100 watt bulb. how the heck do i replace it without damaging the strobe?

::edit:: not my actual light but just use it as a reference..

Use a cotton t shirt or other 100% cotton fabric and re-move the quarts lamp from the unit. Never touch the quarts lamp with your bare skin the oil in you skin can cause the lamp to explode. You just pull up and it will pop out. After the quarts lamp is removed you can use needle nose pliers to remove the base from the socket of the model lamp. It that doesn’t work I had luck with cutting a large potato in half and mashing it into the socket and turning it counter clockwise to remove the base part of the lamp. Hope that made since.

the potato trick works nicely, but does leave a bit of a mess afterwards. cleaning up sure beats buying a new one, or taking it for repair.
