CS2 locks up when I use the healing brush - 08-05-2006, 01:57 PM

Anyone else had that problem? If I use the healing brush more than 8 or 9 (not sure what the magic number is) CS2 locks up. Locks up isn't quite what is happening. I can continue using the healing brush but I can't save or use any other menu functions. I can't close CS2. I have to CTRL-ALT-DEL and then shut it down from there. Even then it takes one or two tries to get it to close.

Talk about an impediment to workflow...

If you have done a Windows Update lately, do this:

START/RUN type in SFC /SCANNOW hit ENTER (this is NOT misspelled)

have your Windows CD ready, and if any dll files are missing, they will be replaced.

OK... I did some more testing. If I drag the healing tool over something it really hoses it up. Maybe a memory deal? I don't know... I loaded some work software yesterday. Maybe the comm drivers running in the background have it hosed up.

I'll try the SFC thing...

I am a MAC man but it seems your Memory and Image Cache is not adequately set up. Go to preferences and set that to your maximum available. Next Plug In & Scratch Discs... allocate additional Drives to that item. In File Handling enable Large Format. In combination of all these issues you may find a relief. Another MAJOR drain on memory is Microsoft Word or Office, it wants to allocate all memory and becomes a proverbial "hog". On my system I have learned to shut off anything Mr. Bill Gates has to offer if I want to have easy time with CS2.
Good luck...

Memory was at 50% (of 1Gb). I set it to 100%. Cache Levels = 6. I didn't know what to do with that so it's still at 6.

I feel your pain too, it locks up on me ALL the time. My husband is a great IT guy and has done all this and that to my machine so its got to be CS2. Heck, it did it on my old HP too (Im Dell now). Ive grown to live with it without throwing too much of a fit when it happens.

I did run into a similar problem. I opened and started editing a VERY large panorama a few weeks ago. The PC locked up, and when I rebooted it by power-off, I got warnings of "disk full". I have since moved the cache for CS2 to a different, more empty drive, deleted the leftover .tmp files, and no problem since opening large files.

Michael; I left the "6" in Cache levels. Thus far no problem. However doing huge layered files (200MB and greater...) will be affected during the healing brush start up... Save the picture often between corrections, it too will speed up the process as does the speed of the "save" command...
But take down Office or Works, both grab all memory caches...

The file size that I've been working on is only 90mb. I've been working on files that size for months with no issues. Something has changed. Office and Works are both off (I did that a long time ago). I just ran a "test" with the memory setting changes and it's doing the same thing. Sometimes hot keys work. Any of the toolbar icons work. It's just the titlebar menu picks that won't drop down. I can't get to filters, Save, Adjustements, etc. So far the only way out is the CTRL/ALT/DEL and shut CS2 down like that. I lose all of my changes when I do that.

I'm working with TIF files. I wonder if it would work better with PSD's?

I'm not too fired up about the idea of edit / save / edit / save. Everything that I've read says to minimize the number of times that you save an image because you lose data on every save.

Thanks

I stopped working in TIFF strictly PSDs then I convert. TIFF seems to bloat big time...

I think that I'll try that. I was originally using TIF's so I could batch process with Noise Ninja Pro but I don't do that anymore. I'll see what PSD's do.
