Mac Book Pro & PS CS2 - 08-15-2006, 10:44 AM

Hi All,

I apologize if this issue has already been posted but I can't seem to find the answer I am looking for.

I am considering buying a new Mac Book Pro but am concerned about running PS CS2 on it since it is not a universal app yet.

Has anyone here had any experience with this combination?

I have a G4 Powerbook that I rarely use because my G5 Power Mac (dual-processor) runs PS CS2 so much faster but I miss the portability of my laptop. I'm afraid if I buy the new Mac Book Pro, I will be disappointed with the performance and just go back to my G5. I'd rather just invest in the new G5 quad-processor.

What do you all think?

Thanks so much!

I'm only going by what i've heard from some people here at the office who have this combo. They say the main setback is photoshop takes forever to open. Once the program is running it runs ok. I'm sure it will run much faster once CS3 comes out next year, but sounds like it runs ok for now. Sounds like it may run the same as your G5 for now? But i'd like to hear from others on this.

There's an Apple Store on Hulen St. in Fort Worth if you don't mind making the drive. They usually have PS loaded on many of their machines so people can see how it runs. You could call them to make sure they have PS on a MB Pro. Might be worth the trip before committing to a purchase.

I have it on my MacBook (2ghz with 1gig ram) and it isn't bad at all. No screaming beast by any means, and more memory will definitely make a difference. It does take longer to load, but once it's up it's decent. On a MacBook Pro with the 2.16ghz and 2gigs of ram and better grfx card, I'd expect to see an improvement.

My store has CS2 loaded onto the new MacPro's, and will be on the 17" MacBook Pro's at our studio. I'd think the Dallas area stores would too.

Where's this store? I thought the closest Apple Store was in Southlake?

I've been contimplating the jump (at least notebook-wise) to OSX, but I've read some distressing things about the new MacBooks and MacBook Pros (Random shutdowns, overheating, mooing noises). I think I've decided to wait until the Merom cores are out and see how those fair...or they fix the problems with the current Intel hardware.

I have the Macbook Pro 2.16 with only one gig of memory and CS2 seems to be working fine. I have been meaning to get another gig of memory and perhaps it will work even better.

FYI on the random issues- if you're looking at MacBooks, look at the serial #. 4 Digits in (I think!) will be the production date, and the ones after wk 31 should be fine.

Thanks for all the great feedback. I go to the store in Southlake and have asked them if they would load CS2 so I could play with it and they told me "no." I thought mabye they were sensitive due to the Apeture app. I'll call the Dallas store and see if they have it. Glad to hear that it runs pretty well, though. I'm not worried about possible issues with the new machines; AppleCare has always served me so well. Even when I was in an almost fatal, highway cross-over accident and my Powerbook went flying across 6 lanes of 35 (and still booted up, I might add!) Apple was great and replaced all parts for $1000 - paid almost $3000 for it originally. It was a 17" G4 Powerbook and the case had cement ground into it, was covered and blood, bent at a 20 degree angle and destroyed the LCD with pieces of the superdrive hanging out. After the fix, they still honored my AppleCare for the remaining time left. I swear by Apple - I'm a permanent "switcher." :)

I didn't know there was one in Southlake. That's really close for me. Closer than Hulen, which I'm not sure the exact location down to the GPS point. :-)

Looks like they haven't opened the Hulen store yet. I heard about it some time back but never followed up on it. Or maybe they changed their minds and opted for SL instead.

Hmmm...thanks for the info. I think I'm still going to wait since the merom core laptops should get introduced next month. I can wait 30 days and see what the new notebooks look/perfom like.

Hopefully, this will also drive the current prices down a little.

Friend just got his Mac pro (xenon) for a day and already considering about returning, it's running even slower with cs2 compare with macbook pro so he said. Something about the woodcrest doesn't have velocity engine.... anyway

Steve, I was told no merom on macbook pro but will get silent updated with new screen, 1:1000 CR, 6ms... he is waiting on apple regional manager for a confirmation. new screen should be around the corner.

Steve, the rumors remained rumors as soon as WWDC passed without words on merom. I think that surpised a lots of Mac fan too.
