Leica M8 coming to Dallas and other goodies - 08-17-2006, 08:22 AM

I was in Cooter's late yesterday and talked to Chris Cooter about the M8. They are supposed to be getting them some time shortly after Photokina.

But there may be a chance to try one out earlier. There is a Leica Workshop going on in Fredricksburg in late October. Cooters have asked Leica to have an M8 there. If this happens, those at the workshop would have a chance for an early test of one.

On the lens front, I got to look at the 75mm f/2.0 'Cron. It's a lovely thing and I learned they had never gotten one back. I also tried the 35/1.4 'Lux on an M7 body and think I'll stick with the 35/2.0 'Cron as it's much smaller and more what I would look for in a "walk around" on a Leica.

So John, I need to give myself an incentive not to enquire or even daydream about the Leica M8. About how much will it cost, and what about the lenses? I'm guessing that once I hear the ballpark figure I will be happy to content myself with daydreaming about getting the next Canon FF DSLR to replace the 5D.

U.S. price will be about 5K.

As for lenses remember you can use all those old used Leica, Ziess, Pentax, etc lenses for the M mount or with an adapter.

For new lenses check this Hong Kong Dealer excellent prices on new.

Thanks John. I'm sure you'll love it, but I'll save it for my retirement, by which time they'll have one with a full-frame sensor. I'll look forward to seeing some of the results from yours, though.
