Why don't they make the vertical/battery grip for the nikon d50? - 10-05-2006, 07:27 PM

One of the big things that annoys me is that nikon doesn't make a battery grip for the nikon d50 with a vertical shutter release?. Does anyone know why this is the case??? It's just i've used the d200 and the d2x with the grips and gotten used to it but then when i used my d50, it just seems weird. but hey i still love my d50. I'm just wondering why they don't make the battery grip for the d50 with the shutter release. boohoo!!.

diem... my thoughts to this effect pertain to Nikon's target market for this body. It's usually the shooters who are not "pros". And this will keep the demand to a minimum. Also, once a shooter has had taste of the port shutter, it just spurs them on to get a "more" pro body. Be that a D100, D200 or D2 series body.

BTW, I know exactly what you're saying. I used to own a D100, with the added base, which I've since sold. I do miss this aspect, but hope to get a D2x soon.

Well, that's the gist of the reasoning diem. But, this opens up many avenues for 3rd party vendors.

Trust me they don't work. No AF lock and the shutter is IR triggered.

If you want a pro body, buy the D200 or above.

That's the way Nikon wants it. Sorry...

I second that.. Back when I had the D70, I looked into a third party grip. Bottomline, they are a kludge. Unfortunately.

Butt that was then and this is now. Quite possibly improvements were made.

Sorry. If Nikon put the electronic connection in the battery bay, they would sell a grip for it. You have to understand Nikon's marketing stance here. The fundamental differences between the prosumer and pro bodies are clear and the portrait grip falls only on the pro side of the fence.

But you go ahead and buy one then let us all know how it works for you. I'll be interested to see your opinion.

Scott is right on. It's all about market segmentation. They would lose sales on higher end cameras if they did that. the D70 was a better camera than the D100 in most respects, but the D100 had a grip available because it was targeted at the prosumer market, like the D200 is today.

Auto manufacturers have been doing stuff like this for years; I'm afraid it's just a part of business.

1. I don't shoot Nikon.

2. Assuming there are contacts for a grip, it would be useful to a consumer as well as a pro or prosumer. If no contacts, it is a moot point.

Hardly.

Actually, if I was shooting in studio or in great light all the time, more than likely I might still be Nikon. At the time, I was shooting a lot of lower light situations that required higher ISOs. Canon was a better fit for me then. The upgrade to Full Frame was a natural progression for me.

BTW: I realize your were joking!
