I consider a book, equipment, since it can help take better pictures, so im putting this post here.
I recently picked it up and it is simply called, "The Digital Photography Book", written by Scott Kelby, subtitled, "The step-by-step secrets for how to make your photos look like the pros'!". This is probably the most informative photo book i have ever read. It gives you many many quick how-to's. The author treats you like you are a friend actually on a shoot with him. I like it because he doesn't go into detail about all of the technical jargon, but instead just tells you how to "get that shot". Ther is a sample picture on almost every page, so ou can actually see what he is describing to you, and see that it actually works. Plus he adds a little bit of humor to the book to keep you interested. It is very easy to understand, and offers "insiders secrets" of how to get more professional looking photos. He also suggests certain gear, most of it fairly inexpensive, like camera levels and filters. It is a fairly cheap book. Retail is $19.99 but it is $15.99 online at Barnes and Noble. check it out at:
