largest memory card in canon DRebel XT? - 10-18-2006, 04:32 PM

The question is just that, what is the largest size CF card I can use in my Rebel XT? I've seen up to 8gb, and was wondering if my camera can handle that.
Also, are the PQI cards from Fry's any good? There is a 8gb for less than $200 there.

Can't answer about the 8 gig since the biggest I use are 4 gig but I have several PQ1 cards and they seem to work just dandy in both my XT and my 20D.

I use the PQI 2 gig in my 1D. It's been working fine for ten thousand pictures or so.

I'm not sure what the exact maximum size is, but 8 gig cards work fine. Most photographers I know would rather use multiple two- or four-gigabyte cards for protection in case one fails.

I use two PQI 1-gig cards in both my XT and 30D without any problems, but I do need to move up to 2 gig.

My son and I shoot with a Rebel XT and our favorite card is a Transcend 120x 4GB card that I purchased from Fry's. Haven't used anything larger than 4GB.

Our other cards in order of preference:
San Disk Extreme III 1GB
San Disk 1GB
Patriot 1GB (from Fry's)

I'd been wondering, everyone who has > 2GB cards, what's the advantage? I can only assume that it'd be for shooting RAW, or wedding/event photography where you don't want to miss a photo switching out cards? Is there a performance determent to using the larger cards?

I currently only have a 1GB Extreme II, but I've been thinking of moving up so I can try shooting some RAW photos (more correctly, so I can shoot more than 30 RAW photos). But, the price difference between the 1 GB and the 2 GB, and between the 2 GB and 4 GB cards, is quite large.

Sorry to piggyback on this, but was curious.

Shooting RAW and shooting sports... you will fill up cards quickly doing either. Especially if you shoot RAW+JPEG full resolution in a 1D Mk. II N or (gasp) a 1Ds Mark II. Those file sizes are pretty big...

Most event shooters have an ImageTank or similar downloading device (or a laptop), but it's still good practice to have enough CF storage to cover the event in case the ImageTank dies. Backups are life!

Ditto Daniel. It's all about RAW. I can easily fill up my 2 gig card at a family get-together or an afternoon with my kids.
