I have had my D50 for a little over a week now and I really like it. I am pretty new to all of this so I am not really the person to say what is good and bad and all that, but I can say I think it is going to meet my hobby needs just fine. I can see it is going to cost a good chunk of money over time. I need more lenses...........

This was my first DSLR, then I purchased a D200 about 4 months later. I found the D50 to be a really nice camera and took about 2200 shots with it in the time frame that I had it. The picture quality was great, and I feel like it did a descent job under low light with the 18-200 VR.

The good: The Price
The Bad: Its a Nikon...

But on a serious note D50 is the only nikon DSLR I ever picked up and played with it was a little hard to navigate some of the controls but beside that It produced some nice images...

The D50 is a great camera, but that low cost comes at a loss of features. These things alone would push me to the D70s/D80:

a) No DOF preview button.
b) No Front Command dial.
c) No Top LCD backlight button.

Then again, I would rather have the D50 + good glass than a more fully featured camera with cheap glass. No matter what camera you buy there will be another 'better' camera tempting you (D70 owner about to buy a D200).

The D50 is great at what it does. If you are just getting into photography, have a spouse who'd use it and not need the DSLR features or stepping up to a DSLR, it's a good camera to consider.

If you're used to having full control over your shutter and aperture, then you might find the D50 hard to get used to. I shoot everything in manual, so the D50 didn't feel right because i'd have to push an additional button to change the aperture when it was in manual mode. The little things like that made me opt for the D70, but it's a good little camera. There is a reason it's captured so much of the intro-level market share...

A)Is completely useless to me
b)all you do is press a button with your finger and use the same wheel, pretty easy and conveniant
c) this one really irritates me about my D50 cuz i have to use my phone or ipod or something to shine light on the screen to see settings

I would highly reccomend the D50, more than the D70/s, less noise, great size, pictures are great, just buy quality glass like is always mentioned

I love my D50! Its just right for my level and how much I use it monthly.. I have a day job so I barely have time to shoot.. I know its sad.. Hmm, the only one thing I really hate too as other stated already is the LCD not having a backlight.. But otherwise, just pair up the D50 with an expensive glass and it will defenitely produce excellent images...
