Mac Pro Memory? - 11-29-2006, 03:22 PM

So even though my system won't be here until tomorrow (B&H split the shipment), I've received my memory. It's Transcend P/N TS64MFB72V6J-T but when I go to their website and search for the Mac Pro I get P/N TS512MAPMACP6-T. It looks to me like the difference is the heat sinks which Apple uses on their own memory.

I called B&H to ask and they insured me that it was compatible and that they have never received any returns. They will stand behind it 100%.

Any other Apple guys here with an opinion?

Scott,

There's one thing I want to mention initially... for the Mac Pro, you need to add 2 memory cards at one time... meaning, the non-heatsink's you order, you did order two, right?

The next issue is compatability: from a quick 30-sec read of both links, the new non-finned memory will work. I'd be concerned about the heat issue. I read an article where they put the non-ECC memories in a Mac Pro and they worked, but during compute-intensive executions, there were more memory related errors. Mac OS X/Tiger was able to catch the errors and correct them, but it does suggest that you'd be wasting cycles doing that.

At worst, you might want to consider buying after-market heatsinks... at best, return the ones you ordered and get the finned/heatsinked versions.

Hope that helps...

Peter

I spoke to a friend of mine here in the office and he just purchased memory for his Pro. He used this source:

Yes I bought a pair. I also know four are better than two.

The two new ones from Transcend have heat spreaders but not the large heat sinks that are on the Mac Pro specific units. They are ECC fully buffered units. Check out this page:

http://www.transcendusa.com/Products...ngNo=0&L4No=75

Which states they are ECC. I placed a call to Transcend to see what they have to say. I hope they call back.

Me want more RAM

Apple 2GB kit - $700
Kingston - $540
Transcend - $540
Crucial - $473
Memory2Go - $366 (yes it has the Apple recommended heat sinks)
Memory Solutions - $341 (looks like the same RAM from Memory2Go)

Anyone dealt with MemorySolutions? I have bought RAM from Memory2Go in the past with good results and no issues.
