Memory cards - 01-01-2007, 08:45 PM

Do you go for the biggest cards that you can get, or do you go for a whole bunch of smaller ones? I'll be buying my D200 soon and a lot of folks have been telling me to start looking at 4Gb cards. While I do plan on shooting a lot more RAW, I'm leaning towards sticking with 2Gb cards. Basically, I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket. I have yet to have a card go bad on me, but I know that it's going to happen. I would just rather run the risk of losing 2Gb's worth of data instead of 4. Know-whut-I-mean?

I have all 1G (15 of those) and 2G (4 of those) cards (using with a Canon 5D and 20D). I'm with you on not losing everything should there be a problem with one card.

I go with 8- 1s vs 2- 4s etc and the price of the 1s right now (CF's) can be found under $20 each (on sales) though they may not be super fast but since I don't shoot sports I don't need super fast to keep up with me. Yeah I have to change cards out a bit more often but that doesn't take that long to do.

I have to agree in getting several 1GB instead of 1 4GB. I have had a 2GB card go bad and luckily it was after only about 20 or so RAW pics. It would have been much worse if it was to the end of a 4GB. I am staying away from the low budget cards these days since the earlier failure of the Transcend card from Frys. I do have some other low cost brands but have not had any trouble with them.

I am keeping my eyes open for some decent sales on either the San Disk Ultras or the Lexar Higher End CF Cards.

Just don't go for anything smaller than a 1 GB. I have a 512 that I started with and they are just not big enough. I had to constantly go back and delete images and then I would miss shots. A 2GB Extreme 3 took care of the problem and I have another on order.

THe 1s for under $20 have been Toshibas so not a real off brand just not a Sandisk.
Have only had one card fail over the years on me so far and that was a Lexar 1. I still have 512's with me but tend to use the 1s first since I don't need to swap out as often.

My usage is depend on writing speed, I used all 2GB first and The 4GB is always on backup due to slower writing speed unless i get down on salt water where i avoid to open the memory door as less as possible.

Wow, I guess I'm just lazy. I hate stopping to switch out cards. I just have 2 - 8 gig cards and usually don't have to switch out at all.

I prefer several 1-gig cards for now. It doesn't bother me at all to stop momentarily to swap cards.

Type III is San Disk nomenclature, and means that the card is faster.
