Leica M8's in at Cooter's in Dallas - 01-19-2007, 08:56 AM

I got a call yesterday that Cooter's had M8's in and they were holding mine for me.

I have to call and decline it, unfortunately. I will decline it. Yes, I will.

Would Leica really ship M8's that have a "known" condition? Wouldn't any new units entering the market be "fixed"?

Which "know" condition? They have the first round of fixes for Green Blobs and streaks but does nothing for IR contamination (other than using filter) and other know problems.

Still there unless you use IR cut filters.

And then the cut filter introduces a cyan cast on the edges when you are using wides greater than 35. The fix for that requires you use coded lenses and C1 the Leica profile will use the EXIF to correct it but of course that's in in C1 yet.

I knew they had a fix for the Banding and Ghosting but I would have thought they could have tweaked the IR sensitivity of the sensor. I guess I thought the 2 free filters resolution was a quick fix. That's unfortunate.

This reminds me of all the Range Rovers we had up here that cost a ton but wouldn't run if the temperature was less than 25. The doctors got so mad they turned - - - LAVENDER!

There's nothing to tweak in the current sensor short of replacing it with one having a stronger IR filter.

Yep, two free filters isn't much of fix when the M8 user manual states one should not use filters.

There are two new banding issues which are very disturbing. One is a green or black bar when there's a strong light outside the read area of the sensor. The other is where the image is split down the middle with one side lighter than the other.

I think Kirk at Cooter's got an ear full for the Leica Rep's when I declined the M8 this morning.

I saw those Leica guys at Imaging USA and chat with them a bit. I resisted the temptation to grill them. They looked pretty beat down to me.

It just would have been ugly, since I don't really care, anyway. Just interesting how this thing was supposed to be the grail, and now...?

It's really interesting on LUF. There are the true believers who say it's as good as MF and nothing is like it and don't want to hear about problems. There are some who just keep hoping it will get better and bought. Then some who just keep watching for some sign the problems are all understood.

Leica has not help matters by all sort of missed communications like sending EU pricing to customers in the US for the 30% lens discount. They have also just not been very forth coming about fixes and any information about know problems.

I don't need a grail but would settle for traditional Leica quaility.

Indeed. What a letdown--I hope it gets better.
