Memory cards - 02-16-2007, 09:39 AM

Is the best recommendation multiple smaller cards instead of 1 large card? Example: 2 1gb instead 1 2gb. Circuit City has a 2 pack of 1gb cards for the same price as 1 gb card. Anyone know about Polariod cards?

personally I would rather have multiple cards.

I actually have two 1gig cards and two 512 cards.

im sure Polariod does NOT actually make the cards. they are probablly made by one of the larger memory companies like Kingston, Lexar or Sandisc and just re-branded to Polariod

Kind of depends on how many shots you can shoot before you fill a card up and what your shooting... IE are you going to be shooting something that requires many shots and no time to change cards?

I prefer smaller cards if I'm not shooting something speed sensitive (which for me doesn't happen very offten) and don't have time to change cards because 1 the cards are small and wouldn't be hard to lose one and if I accidently lose something I'd rather lose something cheaper and doesn't have all my photos on it and 2 if a card was to get gremlins in it then I wouldn't lose all my shot. In other words the old saying "don't put all your eggs in one basket" comes to mind.

I used to think multiple, but haven't stuck with it. The reason is I haven't(knock-on-wood)had any card problems since the first generation of cards. So I use larger (4GB) now rather than having to change more often. Changeing Usually happened at the most inopportune moment!

I've gotten to where I use my 1gb cards for times when I know I'll only be taking a few shots and then downloading, example: wandering around the yard taking flower, bird, or bug pictures. Reason? I'm not having to cycle my larger card(s) over and over for what amounts to very few pictures.
For all other uses, I use 2gb and/or 4gb cards because I know that I may be taking many many pictures before downloading therefore the added cycling is worthwhile. Example: A Saturday's worth of soccer games for the grandbrats may be 500 to 800+ shots before the day is over.
While there may or may not be some expected number of cycles of use before failure on any given card, the above procedure seems to work for me and makes sense in my own mind. My current card inventory is 4x 4gb, 4x 2gb, and about a half dozen or so 1gb cards, all in various brands and read/write speeds.

When I was researching my D50 before purchase, I recall reading that the write speeds would get slower on the larger cards as the cards filled up, and that they also would upload a bit slower to your PC. I haven't even begun to fill up a card yet so I have yet to test it out for myself.

Personally, I have a Sandisk Ultra III 2gb & 2 Kingston 2gb cards. I got the Kingstons really cheap, I think like $35 for both of them to my door from Newegg.com & got them more for a backup to my Ultra. BTW, if you don't know, the D50 uses SD cards instead of the common CF format that most other dSLR's use.

James,
I picked up the bundle pack. they are made by PNY for polariod. It says right on the front. I went ahead and got the 2 pack b/c my new camcorder will also take SD.

Adorama deal on Sandisk Ultra II - 02-16-2007, 10:37 PM

Adorama currently has Sandisk Ultra II 2GB compact flash for $38.95. Although Sandisk is now up to Ultra IV, most cameras can't take noticeable advantage of the speed difference between Ultra II and Ultra IV. I just ordered 2 of them.

Well... Call me stupid, but I've got an 8GB card. Shooting raw, that is just a tad over 900 images before full.

Personallly, I opt for smaller cards. I have 5 2gb cards, and 2 1gb cards. I've toyed with getting 4 or 8gb cards but feel that I would be at risk of losing waaaay too much if the card should go bad.
