Nick, thou 340.00 isn't chump change, count yourself lucky the damage wasn't more than that to repair. I had a friend drop a 300 2.8 and his bill was nearly 3 times that! Then he had to pay for the 1d Mk II that was on the lens that was damamged. Ouch.

Hope you get it back soon.

Dodged the bullet . . . - 03-22-2007, 02:11 PM

Well, you dodged the bullet this time, so how about picking up the phone and calling your insurance agent to see how little the insurance policy would cost to cover the big stuff in your kit.

There are essentially two ways to get it covered. The first would be as personal property of your homeowners policy. This is a more limited coverage and would not cover this particular situation. The second would be to "schedule" it on a personal inland marine policy (unless you are a working photographer, in which case it would be a commercial inland marine policy.) When you do this, you list the items you are insuring and those are the things covered for all risks, world wide. The dropped lens would be covered under this type of policy as opposed to stuff covered on contents with your homeowners. Many companies cover your gear at "actual cash value" which means they will pay you for the value of your used lens. That should be no problem, given the lens you destroyed was a use lens.

What follows is not a quote or an offer to sell insurance to anyone. For about 1/3rd of what you paid for this repair you can probably insure about $10,000 woth of equipment for a year. Need more, do the math. Need less, do the math. Now, pick up the phone. Some will even let you pay it monthly or add it to your monthly insurance bill.

Make the call . . . it is free. Bill Barber

I dropped my 80-200 f2.8 (fell out of vest actually) and the damage was basically to the autofocus mechanism(s). Took shots fine, just everything had to be MF.

I called the Tokina repair facility and the guy told me it would probably be in transit longer than they would have it in their posession. (turned out to be true).

I shipped it, they emailed me an estimate - i approved online, they repaired it - then CALLED ME saying it was ready. They asked me to approve the final charges and i had it back within a week. Was only about 85 bucks.

Those guys at Tokina are AWESOME.

I feel your pain Crash, but I am definitely sorry this happened to you.

No matter how good your shots are, you are ALWAYS going to question the integrity of your lens from this point forward...... I do.

Well I got it, and now there are about 4 specs of dust under the front element. Should I complain?

Ha, your user name is "N-Sur-It"...but you didn't offer a specific company, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

So it's back?
