From what I know IS is the same as our VR Scott. It's not going to help with moving subjects your right, but in low light sport situations it could help with certain shutter speeds. I don't always use my VR, but when I do it definitely makes a difference. Always a nice option to have.

IS/VR helps in intentional blurred action. Much define motion blur with subject in focus than shake hand blur :)

400mm f/2.8L IS

If you get the latter two, a Mark II N or Mark III body would be a good fit as well.
