Sounds like 4 bodies - XT 30D U and your wife.
I have the 70 - 200 F4L no I.S. on 10 D and 20D.
Its great !!!
Think twice if you need 1 stop faster and I.S.
The tripod is the better way to go in my oppion.

I'm going to ride this wave as I have the same questions.

I'm heading to Tokyo, HK, Thailand and Vietnam for 4 weeks and bringing the 10-22, 24-70, 50mm f/1.4 and the 100mm f/2.8 Marco. This is also my first trip and I'm mainly interested in City/Street/Landscape shots.

For those with the telephoto lenses, what was your main subjects at this focal length? I ask because I'm thinking about picking up the 135L for this trip, but don't know if I'll have use for it. Can anyone offer some advice? Sounds like most of y'all tend to for-go the telephoto.

Cheers!

Certainly for Bangkok (haven't been to the other places, but can't imagine there aren't similar issues there), I used my 200 mm f/2.8 to get close to some of the huge statutes, etc. at the Grand Palace, etc. A telephoto would definitely help with that. Here's an example.
