SD to CF Memory Card Adapter - 04-07-2007, 07:34 AM

Can anyone please recommend a good Secure Digital to Compact Flash memory card adapter? I found this one at B&H, but they're sold out:

Does anyone have any experience with these adapters? Do they work well? Do they slow the SD cards down any?

I have this one. It works absolutely great in my Canon MkII. I remove the SD card from the adapter to use in my card reader. Never any problem with it in thousands of photos. Out of stock here too, but try a search. This is what I have and it works.

Thanks. Hmm... I wonder why they're all out. Seems like a handy device to me.

"Seems like a handy device to me."

Probably why they are out - hope they haven't quit making them.
If anyone finds one, pls post it. I am also looking for one.

Just to follow up on this old thread - I did buy a Premiertek SD to CF (type II) adapter. I found it on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Premiertek-Car...8114023&sr=8-1

So far, so good. The SD card slides completely into the CF II adapter, and then the whole package fits into the camera (a DSLR that accepts CF type I/II cards). It seems to work well!

I never knew such a thing existed!

I definitely need to track one down.

interesting.

i understand how this works, but just trying to figure out why you would do it.

I see if you had tons of SD memory and need a CF card for a device, but other than that is there any othre reason?

Versatility. I have cameras that use SD and CF cards, and I carry several of each type of cards with me. For example, if I filled up all my CF cards while out shooting, I can then use my SD cards in my 20D (which only accepts CF I/II cards).

Or, if in the future I got rid of my camera that uses SD cards, then I could still use the cards in my 20D.

It's not a terribly necessary item to have. I could get by without it. But for ~$30, it's nice to have

Edit:
Perhaps another reason is that the trend in digital cameras these days seems to be phasing out CFs in favor of SDs. Therefore I can just buy SDs from now on when I need more memory and use the adapter when I need a CF in my existing cameras.

Another, another reason is that if I want to travel extremely light (like when I go on my too frequent offshore trips), I can take my 20D and SD cards. They are Sandisk "plus" types - they're hinged and break-over to reveal a USB plug (i.e. they're their own USB reader/writer). I can skip taking the CF cards and my chunky CF card reader.

TJ, on your trips are you using a notebook computer? If so, get a PC Card adapter to read those memory cards. It fits inside the PCMCIA slot and takes up no room whatsoever.

Yep, good suggestion. However, I don't have a laptop personally and my work laptop is "loaned" to me only for my trips (i.e. I hate to buy a PCMCIA card when I don't own a laptop or use one on a regular basis). Otherwise, a PCMCIA card reader would be perfect!

Hmmm... maybe I could get my work to buy me one!

I prefer SD cards to CF cards because they are faster and are smaller.
I use 2 SD cards in my MkII all of the time, One in my adapter. I carry 4 SD cards in 1 CF card container so I have 4 times more storage in that single box...I keep it in my Hand Strap so they are always with the camera.

You might try Ebay. That's where I got mine. Works great with my XT but not at all with my 10D. Not sure why though.
