Apparently, Canon has finally set the price on the 1d3. Supposedly, it is $3999.99.

It appears that online retailers have settled in the $4400-4500 range for the first batch of the 1D3.

I've seen it several times recently. Reportedly direct from people within the Canon organization.
There is a MkIII sticky thread over on FM. Look there.

It would be nice if they would sell it for that but everyone I know of is selling in the $4500 range.

Supply and demand and I believe the demand is going to outweigh the supply for some time so I wouldn't be surprised if the cost stayed in that range for 6-9 months.

Hate to be a party crasher, but I would think it would be more respectful of them to be selling it at a higher price point so there can be better separation between their pro line and prosumer line.

...not that I can afford it even at this lower price point :P

That's 1ds line, with almost twice the price compare to 1d.

My sources at Canon tell me that the Mark III's list price is actually $4000 but you can expect to be ripped off to the tune of $4500 for the first few months. The IIN will be internally discontinued on the date the Mark III ships but will stay on Canon's website until they've flushed all the available inventory out of Canon's warehouses. Then, with only the Mark III in the pipeline and initial demand satisfied, you'll see the prices settle down to sub-$4000, and probably the mid $3000 range. This is a case of caveat emptor - let the buyer beware. The same thing will happen when the IDs gets replaced with the IID.

If "they" (meaning, retailers and mail order locales) have the product and you want it, the price will go up. Notice how they do that at the gas pump? Buy a bicycle! Stop driving so much. Buy a Prius. Walk.

I think you are dreaming if you think the 1DMKIII will drop to the mid 3K region. Maybe when it is replaced by the 1DMKIV.

It may drop to the 4K range in a year if the demand has slowed down. I don't see it dropping any lower than that until the end of its cycle.

In addition these cameras are being invoiced to the retailers at the 4K range or just below. Canon has set the price and if retailers choose to sell it for less they stand a chance of losing Canon's support and incentives.
