Question help - restore my monitor profile - 04-11-2007, 05:01 PM

My husband reformatted and reinstalled just about everything on my PC today (per my request, he is really nice like that!) I saved the profiles that I recalled adding to my PC. My monitor color looks all gross now, of course, so I am trying to set back the one I thought I was using.

Right click Desktop > Properties > Settings > Advanced > Color Management > here I added the profiles. I have a bunch of them from when I was playing with different calibration software but I am pretty sure of the one I want. When I highlight it and set it to default and click Apply and OK, my colors do not change. When I rebooted after doing this, nothing changed. Am I scroowed? Is it supposed to change right away? For what it's worth in the General tab it says "Afer I change display settings apply the new display settings without restarting. Am I missing something?

My monitor is the same and I haven't messed with any of the buttons on the monitor.

It's even worse than that. A lot of the text on my monitor is hard to read, too. This is why I hate reformatting! Ugh! I would never have done it if I wasn't running out of space on my C drive because of an old partition.

I hope you downloaded the video adapter vendor's drivers and didn't use the outdated ones from MicroS*t windows update! I mistakenly did an "all inclusive" win update about 9 months ago and it completely toasted my monitor color! get the real drivers!

Yeah, we got the real driver, but didn't save whatever I was using before the format. My husband's theory is that the color profiles are tied to the driver somehow. Another time he tried to update my driver and the colors turned weird, so he changed it back. That must be what it is. I will just have to recalibrate. As for the blurry text, I'm getting a new graphics card. That may not make much of a difference so a new monitor, unfortunately, will probably be called for. More things to spend money on....

Here is some software from microsoft that you can use to control profiles. Works pretty good.

Thanks, I might check that out. My problem is gone, though! My husband gave me his 21" Samsung LCD. He bought a 21" LCD from CompUSA. It cost $265 with tax after using a 10% off coupon. I'm pretty happy. The color is normal (I will still recalibrate, but my desktop wallpaper looks the right color) and everything is crystal clear!

This screen is so big.... I love it. I would have gladly taken the 20" but he said this one is a little better for photos and the other is a little better for gaming.

Suzy,

I have been looking at 20+ inch widesreen Viewsonics. Anything in particular you prefer about the Samsung. Both have been recommended.

Charles, I don't know too much about it. Right now I have the Samsung 215TW (21") and my husband is using the Samsung 206BW (20"). He also looked at Viewsonics but you have to compare them model-by-model, not overall by brand. He says the 215TW is supposed to be better for photos because it's 8-bit, no dithering, which is better for color, and the 206BW is better for gaming (it's 6-bit) because it supposedly has less motion blur. One cosmetic problem is that the Samsung 20" has a shiny bezel. Currently it's bugging my husband so I half expect him to swap our monitors in the near future!
