I have CS3 but still using CS2 for most of my stuff because I am just doing quick edits and I have my steps down with CS2.

Have you found a lot of advantages to using CS3 that you couldn't do or took more time with CS2?

For me it comes down to these issues:

Universal binary for the Intel Mac
Camera RAW 4.0
Smart objects

Obviously if you don't have an Intel Mac, the first issue is moot.

But IMHO, camera RAW 4.0 is alone worth the update. The abilities to do most of the work directly in RAW, then only edit the shots that need it is a huge advantage (even more so if you use Bridge). There is also the idea of presets that works wonders on the linear data!

I'm just learning how powerful the smart objects are. Once I know more I'm sure that will help as well.

In the end it comes down to your workflow an how you want to process images.

Oops. I think that is what I meant instead of smart objects. Those were available in CS2 also.

Scott,

Do tou use the camera raw to convert nef files instead of capture NX? How does the new raw converter in cs3 compare to capture?

I never really used Nikon Capture very much. First off, it's hideously slow and I never really made heads or tails of the UI. I started with Adobe Camera RAW on Photoshop CS and then moved to CS2 and now CS3, liking the improvements all the way.

I have not tried Capture NX, so I can't tell you much about it. At the moment, I have no need to change my workflow so ACR is my converter of choice.

In addition to the ones listed above:

1) The new refine edges tool.
2) Improved HDR.
3) Impoved panorama tools.
4) The new B&W adjustment function.
5) I haven't done timings but it 'feels' faster.
6) The updates to the included Bridge application are really nice.
7) The additonal optional functionality in the Curves dialog (histogram, etc.) is very nice.
8) The single column tool bar is really nice, you can never have to much image display area.
9) The collapsible panels are nice too.

NX was much better than Capture. I have been amazed at the images I'm getting from it comared to jpeg (even with the best in camera jpg settings I can muster--still need some refinement there). It's much faster than Capture, too.

If CS3 ACR does as good, I'm sold.

CS3 is faster but when I use the Text tool it just hangs for about 30-40 seconds!!!

Go information. The reason I upgraded was because I liked the new selection tool where you can paint the selection and I had $100 gift certificate on amazon.
