New filter to capture images in dim light, Kodak says

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A year from now, capturing a crisp, clear image of a candlelit birthday party could be a piece of cake — even with a camera phone.

Eastman Kodak said Thursday it has developed a color-filter technology that at least doubles the sensitivity to light of the image sensor in every digital camera, enabling shutterbugs to take better pictures in poor light...

An f/1.0 does a fine job today with a candle or less. Why wait?

OK, so Kodak is talking about a 1 to 2 stop increase in sensitivity. On phone cameras first? What has this world come to?

Realistically, a 5D operating at 6400 or 12800 would be nice. Or the M8 at 2400 or 4800. With all due respect to owners of f=1.0 lenses, the big winners will be all the folks laboring along with f=5.6 zooms. Or those of us with a nice assortment of f=2.0 & f=2.8 lenses that perform very well wide open.
