To be honest, my partners 24-105 gives better results. The 24-70 is a bit inconsistent at various focal lengths (at least my copy). The F2.8 does help... I really am impressed with how well the IS works with the 24-105 too.. Seem to get more keepers...

I'll probably send my 24-70 in for adjustment at some point. But it gives great results when my subject is within 10-15ft.. Past that and for group shots, I just cannot get it as sharp as I'd like. 24-105..no problem. Weird. Perhaps I can calibrate it myself with the mark III. we'll see.

The 24-70 does focus faster in low light.

Just some more rambling thoughts.. LOL
I agree. My 24-105 gets more keepers than my friends 24-70. Plus when we go to places that do not allow flash, I get this big smirk on my face. He knows why, IS rules...

I am waiting for some hard evidence on the successor that will sway my decision...

Since you've waited this long.., I'd wait a little longer. Canon will either release a 5D upgrade or a New model downgrade (7D) and the specs, price, performance should help you finalize your decision.

If they release a 5D upgrade with 14-bit images, more megapixels and even better noise handling; I'll have to decide whether or not to move up from my 5D and you'll be glad you waited.

I made the jump from Nikon to Canon about 4 years ago.
Nikon was my main squeeze since F2 days but Nikon Digi is just so far behind these days with all their outsourcing downsizing and the mega hit they took on their Semiconductor market in late 90's / 00's. Nikon Corp is still recovering from that hit.

Its a 2 way street ... sell D200 now before prices drop on that and then buy 5d or 5d next depending on what you prefer and can afford.
The time is right to sell now and buy in near future.
Do it - its a good move and tis the season.

I would just get the nikon d300.
You get to keep your lenses and it should solve your noise issues.
Especially if you like the ergonomics and button layout of the nikon.

I switched from Nikon and love my 5D. It depends if the features of the new camera will be worth the extra money for you. If you would never buy the successor but can now afford the 5D because of the price drop then its a no brainer. If you were not getting the 5D because of its price to begin with are you saying you may now be ready and would get its successor if it had the right features?

The 5D is a great camera. VERY low noise. Full frame and great features. The new camera is supposed to have.

anti-dust sensor
more focus points
possibly a digicIII processor ? (Not sure)

I have not seen all the specs on what Canon is coming out with. Depending on what it is my 5D might be up for sale so contact me after the announcement.

Alright, I just got back and the financing changed from 24 to 12 months, so I didn't do it. Maybe its a sign to wait and be patient :)

BTW, does anyone know of any link where I can find D300 sample images?

Thanks for all your responses.

there are samples in the equip thread. you should just wait and either get the d300 or d3.

I have a feeling with these new bodies, the people who left nikon to canon will be

Hopefully the D300 has better noise handling than the D200.

I wanted the 5D because of its handling of noise at high iso. But also, I don't want to pay a premium for it (plus all the other lenses I need to buy as a result of the switch over). If the D300 will do the job, then that's more comfortable purchase to make and swallow :)

Yes, and the hit in the pocket book from the switch is hard to swallow. I am still short 2 lenses because I just could not afford them after going to the 5D. I will probably also never switch again just because it is VERY costly. I will just have to keep the faith that Canon will always try to one up Nikon. I was trying to keep the same thought process when I had a Nikon body and wait for a full frame camera from them. Just when I thought they would never do it and made the jump to Canon look what happened. Just goes to show there is always something better around the corner to those that are patient. Better be patient now then sorry later

Night and day compared to the d200.
Some are saying that the d300/d3 noise performance will best canon.

Try a search on different forums. I quickly came up with these but there are probably better examples somewhere...

5D prices are excellent right now for what this camera can do. However, if you waited this long, why not wait and see how the Nikon D3 turns out to be like. Nikon glass is slightly better than Canon and since you already have the Nikon system, might cost you more to switch. Once the successor to the 5D is announced next year, the 5D is going to drop to the $1800 or less range - what it should have been priced at when it was released :)

And don't forget about the 40D. It looks to be everything the D200 is with the exception that the 40D handles the noise much..... better.
