I've got lenses that require a 52mm, 58mm and 72mm filter. Do I have any other alternatives other than to buy 3 CPL's, 3 UV's and 3 ND? I've seen some step down rings, but wasn't too sure about them. Also, any recommendations on brand? I'm currently looking at Hoya.
Thanks!

A 52-58 step-up ring would work ok and reduce the number of filters required. Going from 52 to 77 might require too many rings. Hoya SMC are good. B+W may be better.

Great idea! Does it matter on the brand of step up ring? I found a Hoya for $6 shipped. Any downsides to using a 58mm filter on my 52mm lens?

I'm sure a Hoya ring is fine. Downside? The hood won't fit. You could maybe find a generic 58mm rubber hood that won't cut off the image when used on the 52mm filter ring lens.

It helps if we know the focal length of these lenses

50mm 1.8 (52mm filter)
18-55mm (58mm filter)
70-300mm (58mm filter)
28-135mm (72mm)

I've got a bunch of 58mm filters, 1 52mm filter and no 72mm yet. It will be a big help if I can use my 58's on my 52 lens. Then all I need to do is buy some 72's. The only lens that has a hood is the 72.

Most of my filters are 58mm I use a simple stepdown ring purchased on Ebay to a 52mm.
Not only saves money on filters but it reduces time fumbling around for the correct size.

Thanks for all the replies. I found one of these locally for $5 so I'm gonna go that route. Now all I need to do is buy some 72mm filters.
